When we are healthy, with Williams and Dareus and even Kelsay, our run defense is amazing. We started the year by shutting down two of the best rushing teams in the NFL and made them one-dimensional.

I agree. Merriman played the run very well, too.

But, it is what it is at the moment. We are a sieve on D, against the run or pass.

Quote from you: "Miller is a marginally more talented Maybin at this point."

http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/topic/125960-von-millers-potential-in-the-nfl/page__view__findpost__p__2084594

How 'bout just a simple "I was wrong." We're all wrong at some point or another

Another Maybin comparison by DrDareustein: http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/topic/125735-two-possible-picks-playing-tonight/page__view__findpost__p__2080524

He's a pass rush specialist that doesnt play the run well. I still stand by that comparison to Maybin. Once he starts playing like Suggs or Paup and breaks up running plays in the backfield and stuffs RBs at the LOS, I'll admit he proved me wrong.

Also, neither of those are the Von Miller thread that everyone is referring to.

This is the thread here...

http://forums.twobillsdrive.com/topic/129516-von-miller-discussion

Edit: Wow, re-reading that thread is just as frustrating as when it was active. Thoner and I get accused of saying "Miller sucks" when nothing of that sort is ever mentioned. My point that I reiterate a few times is that he was not the player the Bills needed. And I'll still stand by that. Had Miller been available, and had the Bills drafted him, he would be pretty ineffective this year. With Williams out, and no other Big Bodies up front, his pass rushing would never have mattered.

All I know is there was an epic thread about Von Miller leading up to the draft and it was filled with posts from people saying he would never make the transition to the NFL. That Robert Quinn was the better choice. A lot of people need to eat crow about Von Miller. He's a rare talent.

GO BILLS!!!

Crow eaten, I was all about Quinn, who from what I understand has seen almost no playing time

I think Quinn is going to be fine. The Rams use him primarily as a situational pass rusher and he flashes talent. Missing his last season of college ball didn't help, either.

Not to take anything away from Miller but he does get the added advantage of playing opposite Dummervil. Which he is a lot to handle. Puts Miller in some very good situations. Makes me wonder how he would have done without an All Star rusher opposite him.

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned

from ProFootballtalk and I agree completely

thats a ridiculous game

Von Miller had 10 tackles, four quarterback hits, three tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, and a pass defensed on Thursday night. He did not let the Jets passing game operate, and he was disruptive in the run game.

We’d call this a breakout game, but Miller has been a star from day one. He has 9.5 sacks on the season. He has been a consistent force and continues to get better.

The Broncos defense started the season out as a terrible group, but they have allowed only 30 points in the last ten quarters. That’s why the Broncos season has turned around, and Miller is the key.

Just give the guy the Defensive Rookie of the Year award now. Aldon Smith has been great, but he’s not nearly as complete as Miller. (He also doesn’t play as much.) J.J. Watt is solid, but not as spectacular. Patrick Peterson may one day be a true shutdown cornerback; Miller is one of the very best pass rushers in football.

Tebow is a great story. Miller is already a great player.

Dumervil missed the first three games of the season and then didn't have a sack in his first four games played while rounding back into form.

What did Miller do during those 7 games? Six sacks, including one in five straight games.

Ok, now we're talking. He keeps that up and I was definitely wrong about him.

Would still choose Dareus over Miller for the 2011 Bills every time though.

Wait a minute, Dr. Are you saying you didn't even watch the game last night? You would have seen how Miller amassed these stats and he maybe would have passed your eye test.

You guys were leading the charge saying that he's too small to be effective. Bottom line. You guys were ridiculous in completely writing him off because he weighed 246 and not 260. Perhaps we can dig up the threads.

As for the last part, you're correct. The Bills would have had no need/use for Von Miller and his 9.5 sacks.

It's funny that you just completely ignored his post in your response. The specific concern was stopping the run...Why were people concerned about this? The Bills were the worst run defense by far last year, they wanted improvement there. It's tough to ever doubt his pass rush, but Miller does not play the run well. That is where the concern was...You are basically making stuff up here.

The fact of the matter is, despite how good he has looked rushing the passer (yes, he looks good), he has NOT done well against the run. I have watched every game, he was even benched due to poor play when he wasn't blitzing, specifically the run.

Miller is good, personally I have never doubted that. But I DID want Dareus over him, as that seemed to be the bigger need for the Bills. This is all a moot point anyway, Miller was taken before the Bills pick...end of story.

Exactly. Yes Miller looks like a stud pass rusher. He still struggles against the run. Dareus has been a force so far this year, and has been good against the run, while applying plenty of pressure against the pass (of course we could still use edge rushers, but we couldn't draft BOTH of them). Things worked out great for both teams...

He's been much better against the run since he was benched.

He was downright GREAT against the run last night. Especially on his backend pursuits. And that's against a pretty good running team.

The kid is a force out there. Period. And it ain't just his pass rushing that makes him one. Once he figures out pass coverages he'll be the complete package.

would do anything to trade dareus for miller or newton. the argument that "dareus was a better choice for us" is absolutely laughable, and could only be proposed by the most homerish of homers like Dr. D. dareus' best position, nose tackle, is a position where we already have a solid starter in kyle williams. and while it's only been a few games, it's pretty obvious dareus is significantly better at nose than end.

so on what planet is having an ANOTHER good NT more advantageous than having a devastating OLB in the mold of derrick thomas? especially on a team just stacked with talent like moats and merriman at OLB.. :wallbash:

Where are the guys that were saying Von Miller is too small and weak to be effective in the NFL? So many people ranting: "he gets manhandled by college TEs, the NFL tackles will eat him alive". well, you're wrong. I love Dareus. I'm glad we have him. I'm gonna get crucified for this, but I'd rather have Miller. Having a PREMIER pass rusher is so important in today's game and Miller IS a premier pass rusher. Dareus will be a dominant player for years to come and will hopefully anchor our defense for his entire career, but until we get premier pass rusher, our defense will continue to struggle (even after Edwards is axed). This isn't an anti Dareus post, he's the best player on our roster (fred ex may have something to say about that), but a hail Von Miller post. The guy is an absolute monster. 9 tackles 1 sack (maybe 1.5) a FF. The sack pretty much ended the game. 9 or 10 sacks on the season, only 2 games in which he hasn't gotten to the qb. He's not a Bill, but I'm a fan. Lets hope he doesn't end fitz in a couple weeks.

I was wrong about VON Miller.

Correct about Cam Newton and Dareus.

I guess two out of three ain't bad.

better than the Bills' front office for the last 10 years

Marv Levy was quoted saying even if Willis was available he wasn't going to take him...

Did he really??

I remember after they ended up with Lynch and Poz, he said they had 3 players in mind for the 1st round pick and they ended up with 2 of them.

Wow, what a laugher. If we had drafted Miller, only to be gouged for 200 yards per game like last year, you be saying the exact opposite. Yeah Newton has surprised people, and I like him but don't get carried away...His team is 2-7, and while he started out hot passing, his stats have become very pedestrian lately.

Miller looks great as a pass rusher, I don't dispute that. But Dareus has been a beast against the run and picked up some sacks him self. BTW, Dareus has played a lot more DE than NT for us. If you haven't noticed that while watching these games I have to seriously question your knowledge of football.

We could have used any of the 3 of those guys, or all of them. Unfortunately we only have one pick, and he's doing just fine....

lol yea, except the bills front office disagrees with you, seeing as though they had NEWTON - MILLER - DAREUS in that order on their draft board.

as for the bolded, you must have missed the part where I acknowledged the fact dareus has played DE and NT. and like we all saw, he was 100x more effective at nose tackle, a spot where we already have a pro bowler on our roster.

Give it a rest. Dude has 48 tackles and 9,5 sacks. Double and triple the output of dareus. "struggle" is hardly a word to describe his performance.
