However, they kept Porter Cable... Powermatic I believe is a part of WMI along with Jet and are at least American based as is S,B&D... Crazy... The sweetheart Stanley chisels jut released the last few years were based on the old Stanleys that were made here in the USA.... Noe they are made in the UK I have to be honest, I am just a chump for the powermatic yellow paint Yes but your point had literally nothing to do with it being a religious holiday. Your point was "you're going to spend money anyways so spend it on the US/local economy". You just threw it in there for no reason. People tend to associated x-mas with presents.... I am not sure in 20 years of Christian schooling where buying stuff and placing it under a Tree ad ny correlation.... Holiday spending forecasts are about X-mas..... the religious holiday..... I fail to see the confusion D- JC was about charity, kindness and others... I can assume somehow that is where presents came from, but jc's deal was more about the sck and poor.... Hobby...but if I can flatter myself, I'm pretty decent at it. I do turning for relaxation, and am doing the trim carpentry in a living room I'm almost done remodeling - I recased a bow window (had to, it was water damaged), and my wife complimented me saying it looked like professional work. In fact, it's pretty clear through a plain reading of the Bible story that Jesus was born in the spring - Aprilish, not in December. It was the usurpation of a pagan Roman holiday that became Christmas; not because there was any religious significance to December 25th, but because the early Church couldn't figure out how to get people to stop celebrating a pagan holiday and not coming in to church to tithe. "Presents at Christmas" was supposedly a St. Nicholas thing (i.e. Santa Claus), not anything directly to do with Jesus' canonical teachings. Really, Christmas has about as much to do with Christ as Halloween does. It's a mash-up of St. Nicholas' Day (which is why a fat man in a red suit brings us presents) and the Winter Solstice (which is why we dress up a tree - pagan ritual morphed into a Christian one to make Christianity more appealing to the Germanic tribes in the early first century, much like how Sufiism was Persian mysticism blended into Islam). Haha! But you forget about leap years. They weren't a thing until around the turn of the 19th century. So every 4 years you add one day. Extrapolate that back 1800 years and it will add to 450 days. so December 25th adding 450 days would put Jesus's birth somewhere around the end of March. Hobby, hoping to be career at some point.... my intertest is contemporary/modern furniture, but I do enjoy designing built-ins.... As for a true "Made in America" table saw, the best one out there right now is the new Delta Unisaw! And no, I don't work for Delta but have worked closely with them in the past and know the tools better than most that work there now... Even the motor on it, made by Marathon, is certified "Made in America" which was a feat in itself because when Delta approached them initially about it, they had no idea where the raw materials originated, and it took a couple years just to sort that part out. I've had the chance to work with one, and I'm tellin' ya, it is an amazing machine, and the one piece trunnion an engineering marvel... If ya google it, I'm sure you can find the video of Scott Phillips demonstrating it and if you can't, PM me and I'll send ya one... Anyway, I deal more with the use and repair myself, than the development but love what I do!! As for the job... Who knows??? Right now, there are 2 of us who basically hold the department together, and things are going so well, there is no hurry from upstairs to make the decision, so I'll just keep doing what i do best... teach about tools... Edit to add.... Even though the Uni is MinA, Delta itself was just bought out by a Taiwanese company about a year ago... I knew it rang a bell, Scott Phillips from American Woodshop- watch it all the time. Watched a video about the Unisaw, gotta say, pretty impressed with some of the small details that were not overlooked in the design. I think Rockler near my house either has a SawStop or Unisaw on display... I am going to go buy and see.... It's pretty amazing when you can start and stop a 600+ pound machine and still balance a penny. My bandsaw starts and stops passing the nickel test, and if Finley adjusted can support a penny... As a professional for over 25 years before this job, I think it's great when people take to it as a hobby and are good at it... Guess it's a guy thing, returning to your roots sort of. For me, I was pretty much born into it, with woodworking and DIY a way of life on both sides of my family. And believe me.... I know the wife thing as mine can be my own unbiased critic!! I tried sitting behind a desk after college, and just wasn't ready for it. With this job even, yeah, I have a desk, but I'm rarely behind it, always out getting my hands dirty so to speak, and being able to look back at something at the end of the day, besides a pile of paperwork.. That's one of the reasons I started turning pens: my job at this point is mostly sitting around in meetings (have one in five minutes) being smarter than everyone else (sadly), with a time-frame of 18-24 months to see anything completed. It's nice to go home at the end of the day, and do something completely different and tactile, and have a tangible accomplishment after an hour or so. Thats awesome, I sit here in Envy- my wife and I are trying to get our house paid off, school loans, etc. so we can quit out jobs and do things we really enjoy.
