RuntheDamnBall Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I think a few weeks ago you could have said that Donald Jones was a contributor that the team missed. Hopefully it was just rust, but Jones didn't impress me at all yesterday. I didn't see him throwing any vital blocks on big plays (a strength of his game) and he was out of sync with Fitz all day (partially #14's fault, but I think you have to distribute blame evenly). Jones has left 2-3 big plays on the field per game, and while he's redeemed himself with some late game-savers, he does not make enough positive contributions at this time to merit the most snaps at WR. Meanwhile, Jones' return put CJ on the bench for more of the day. I think that was a mistake. I know the future for CJ is not at receiver - at least not the way the team envisions it - but I think he has more home run potential than Jones ever will. And CJ was starting to do some of the little things well, too. I would liked to have seen Jones take another week to return against a less critical (non-divisional) opponent, rather than changing things up. In addition, CJ would have been a quick-strike mid-deep threat to account for when all the short-mid action was being shut down. That at least scored the Bills a big PI against the 'Skins. I like Chan and it's hard to take issue with most of the results, but going vanilla meant there were few extra variables to account for (BSmith, Spiller especially).
Ramius Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I've thought all season that Jones was garbage as a #2, and he's done very little this seasons to dissuade me from that opinion. He makes little impact in any aspect of the game. What the Bills have is a #1 in Stevie and a few good #3's. I really like Nelson, but he seems to work best out of the slot. The Bills definitely need a legit #2/burner type of WR to take some pressure off of the underneath guys. I'd be all for Spiller moving to WR and playing in place of Jones. (Not as a #2 WR, but getting reps there)
CBD Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I don't recall any big plays for him to throw vital blocks on.

reddogblitz Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Donald Jones is OK. He's just not starting WR material for an NFL team making a run at the playoffs. He catches stuff that medium difficult or easier. However, the tough catches you gotta fight for or dive for or whatever, he doesn't get those. We need someone better. I'm not sure if that person is on the roster right now or not, but we need someone better. Spiller looked OK to me too, but he wasn't lighting the world on fire either.
EldaBillsFan Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 i was confused by the idea of starting Jones and i like Jones....but Spiller is Jones but with 4.27 Speed...Defenses have to respect that..... Jones is a nice option....but when you want to open that middle of the field you have to make then respect the deep ball...
RyanC883 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Nelson is much better than Jones. I'd rather see CJ in Jones spot. WR's like this: Johnson, Nelson, CJ, Jones. In that order.
C.Biscuit97 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 He was starting to pick up his play before he got injured (against the Eagles). The guy then missed a month and what do you expect? Besides, the Bills don't really need a #2. The thing that makes this offense good is they don't have to force the ball to anyone.

I know what you're saying, but I think there are certain plays you can make with Spiller that are essentially out of the playbook when Jones is in there. Even when Jones was picking up his play, would you say he was picking it up to the level of an NFL #2, or to "acceptable" status? Take a look around the league and see who is slotted in at #2 on other teams. On any of them, is Donald Jones an upgrade? I like the kid as a #4 in the spread formations, but there is a need for game-breaking talent to be on the field. It's like putting a decent #7 hitter in the #2 hole in baseball. He might surprise now and then, but should he be getting the most at-bats?

He likes Jones alot. I really believe he was looking like a #2 against the Eagle and then got hurt. I'll give him a game or 2 to improve his play before moving him out of the starting lineup. I do agree that Spiller need more touches. It's like a girl getting breast implants and wearing a sweater.
