NFL statskeepers should subtract 20 yards

That would be a much, much truer indication of a punter's average. If you're punting from the 50, a 31 yard punt is better than a 50 yard punt. Since the team immediately and automatically gets the ball on the 20, that is where the punter's yards should be tallied from. It also rewards punters for kicking out of bounds or fair catches inside the 20.

That would, of course, likely show that Moorman is a better punter statistically, too.

Doesn't that come out of their net average? Gross should still be whatever the punt was.

if you kick from the 50 and it goes into the end-zone than its a 30 yard punt

Touchbacks do in fact come out of their net average.

Yep, you're right it does, I just looked it up. Still, the punting averages they use as leading the league are the gross averages which are still, IMO, grossly misleading at times because of those 20 yards. At least as far as telling who punts the ball the best.

I'd like to know who wins when you remove the fan votes.  The only votes that should matter are the players and coaches.  Certain teams have larger fan bases, and they can vote over and over again.

True but when just the players and coaches voted (before 1993) it was just as much or more a popularity contest. Besides, the players and coaches are about the only ones that don't get to watch more than one game each Sunday, although they do watch the film of the teams they play.

It's no less a popularity contest allowing the fans to vote, and the problem is you can't control people from voring over and over. That's the biggest problem with it. And how many games do fans see every week? Two, maybe 3?
