truth on hold Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 State of the local economy is a factor in support of a dome in NF. need something to spur a recovery/revitalization. not going to happen on its own. NF needs to shed the factories as America has lost this battle to places like China and other emerging economies. Get back to "clean uses" that leverage existing assets like the falls, when possible. seriously, waiting for the economy to turn and then build a dome has it arse-backwards
LabattBlue Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I don't know if this has been brought up, but the biggest problem with placing a stadium in NF...one two lane highway in(except for canadians, almost everyone will be coming in on the 190), one two lane highway out?
shibuya Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Unless the NFL is willing to pony up a significant chunk of the money to build it there is just not enough local revenue to justify it. A retractable roof dome in Niagara Falls would be optimal.. Especially if the endzone facing the falls was a giant glass wall that always had a view of the falls.. That would be the money shot view !!!!

That would be the money shot view !!!! You'd have to build it on the Canadian side of the falls to do that. Slap bang in the middle of downtown NF, which is too hilly to do. Everyone needs to pause a beat here and think: is there appropriate transport in NF? The answer is clearly no.
Bills(70) Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 State of the local economy is a factor in support of a dome in NF. need something to spur a recovery/revitalization. not going to happen on its own. NF needs to shed the factories as America has lost this battle to places like China and other emerging economies. Get back to "clean uses" that leverage existing assets like the falls, when possible. seriously, waiting for the economy to turn and then build a dome has it arse-backwards Ok, I tried to bring 8 to 12 thousand middle income jobs to NF, the powers that be at the local and state level put the whammy on that with their "PAY TO PLAY" mentality. Joe, you need to come to the realization here that Niagara County is the most corrupt county in WNY when it comes to politics. I have experienced it first hand and Albany is right in the mix on it. Also, you cannot shed the factories the way you suggest, it's not that easy. Occidental Chemical, Dupont Sodium/Olen Chemical, Niacet, Praxair.....they are all here to stay in that industrial corridor. The cost of a cleanup of that area would be well into the upper 15 to 20 billion range and would take years. Downtown NF is a different story altogether however, and the one thing holding back any development down there is the tight grip certain (won't name names, do your own research) groups or people have on not only the property, but the permitting process at the political level as well. The economy will not turn around in this area (Erie county included) until the existing power structure of the 2 party system and it's supporting money is removed from the equation, it really is that simple.
truth on hold Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 (edited) I'm not saying clean up the factories I'm just saying don't expect them to come back as an economic base. Theyre far enough away from where I envision a stadium to be any kind of environmental factor. I hear you on politics but reality is they're everywhere. It's a mega project like this that can both incent them to overcome differences and bring in external forces to impose solutions on them , that makes things happen. It's a very compelling proposition if we get state funding. Time for schumer to keep his promise of keeping bills in the area, and turn americas run down "back door" into a shiny new front entrance, a projected net tax positive event for NYS. The rest of the owners and Goodell would be all over it Edited November 3, 2011 by Joe_the_6_pack
PromoTheRobot Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 (edited) You'd have to build it on the Canadian side of the falls to do that. Slap bang in the middle of downtown NF, which is too hilly to do. Everyone needs to pause a beat here and think: is there appropriate transport in NF? The answer is clearly no. If by transport you mean roads to NF, then there are plenty. Most people think you have to go through Grand Island to get to the Falls. There are at least 3 other major routes you can take to get there. But you just raised an interesting scenario: How would people feel if a new stadium was built in NF Canada? Either along the QEW, or smack dab in the middle of tourist trap downtown with the wax museums and casinos? US fans could park and tailgate on the American side, then walk over the Rainbow Bridge to the game. I don't know if this has been brought up, but the biggest problem with placing a stadium in NF...one two lane highway in(except for canadians, almost everyone will be coming in on the 190), one two lane highway out? You act like NF has a moat around it. There are at least 4 routes to NF...1) The I-190 2) River Rd. & LasAlle Exp. 3) NF Blvd. and 4) Rt.104. Look at a map. Build an open air stadium in downtown Buffalo on the waterfront! I love the idea of a late December game with cold gray skies! The Vikings have never been the same since they movede to a domed stadium, take football back to its roots, muddy, snow and the gray December sky. You, sir, are a masochist. nick in* england Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 A lake front stadium is the obvious location if you are moving away from OP. I suggest they reclaim this area and build a stadium with lots of parking, a new major shopping complex, entertainment, rail links and dedicated access to I90. http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=42.819707,-78.857803&ll=42.81914,-78.862953&spn=0.033682,0.117245&num=1&vpsrc=6&t=m&z=14&iwloc=near If they did this - think of the amazing TV views you could have of the downtown skyline (which is awesome). This area additionally could use some rejuvenation and a stadium complex might be the trigger.

A lakefront stadium, domed or not, would be a colossal misuse of land better suited for recreational activities. Build something there that can be used more than 8-10 times a year.

Errrr... didn't you read about the entertainment and shopping in my thumbnail proposal?
truth on hold Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Errrr... didn't you read about the entertainment and shopping in my thumbnail proposal? Buffalo retailers are already starving. Where's the demand coming from that supports this new mega mall?
RTW2012 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Errrr... didn't you read about the entertainment and shopping in my thumbnail proposal? Err. A stadium is gonna take up a huge chunk of that land, including parking. Why bother with the stadium?
Mike in Horseheads Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Heres a few thoughts to ponder when your waiting for that new dome to be built: 1) Bass Pro Shop 2) New Peace Bridge. ...I see progress is moving right along on those projects to enhance the area.
