benderbender Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 The best thing that Merriman did this year was instill confidence in our defense, as far as I'm concerned he accomplished the minimum of what was expected of him.
snamsnoops Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 You think this had anything to do with HGH testing? There no mention of a achilles injury. That same week the NFL is ready to conduct HGH testing. The NFL PA resist, trying to stall the process, proably to protect some players, and he suddenly has an injury. If he is on IR, is he exempt from subtance testing for the rest of the season? Either way it a big blow I think. If he was caught again it would be a year suspension. I don't think 3 years of being injured would be considered sudden!
LABills08 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Is this a bad time to mention Maybins stats?
nobody Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 The best thing that Merriman did this year was instill confidence in our defense, as far as I'm concerned he accomplished the minimum of what was expected of him. Agree with that - of course that probably makes him the highest paid coach ever in Bills history.
Peter Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Didn't he also help recruit Barnett and Morrison? The best thing that Merriman did this year was instill confidence in our defense, as far as I'm concerned he accomplished the minimum of what was expected of him.
RevWarRifleman Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Oh well. We got him on the cheap, anyway. Besides, is there anybody that was convinced that this wouln't be a possibility?
Dr. K Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 The Merriman experiment was worth a shot. His presence and commitment brought Barnett and a serious attitude. I don't see that the Bills giving him a shot cost them much; overall it was a solid net positive. Now we get to see what these young guys have got.
EastRochBillsfan Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Another telling clue I tried to mention was the fact that San Diego released him. QUESTION: What team dumps a SUPERSTAR that is recovering from a manageable injury who will likely return to something at least slightly resembling his former probowl form? ANSWER: Nobody! It was clear as day. Give it a rest Robo-tripper. You know nobody said Maybin was a probowler. All I will say is 3 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in how many games? Here is another interesting fact for you....Maybin and Merriman have the same number of probowls in the last 3 years Barnett is one. That's working out pretty well for us.(I don't know if he made the probowl but he did lead Greenbay in tackles a bunch of years) Look, they took a chance on merriman and it didn't work out. I believe MOST here thought it was a chance worth taking.
PDaDdy Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Drew Brees... Traded not dumped. Nice try. Not to mention Phillip Rivers, their golden boy, was ready. He's a pretty damn good QB himself. He should have never been drafted while they had Brees but he was on the roster. Likewise you never came close to qualifying much less quantifying the risk of signing Merriman, but judged it to be a bad one. Pure speculation against pure speculation. Glad you feel vindicated, but that point was definitely missed in the original cluster F of a thread. Go back and check the threads. I threw out a number and said it was a bad risk. Just my opinion but at least I took a stand and tried to back it up.
Mr_Blizzard Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) http://www.buffalobi...08-d6df5235663f So long "comeback". Sad but not surprising. I still think it was worth the risk signing him when we did. Hopefully there is a serviceable FA journeyman available. Maybe director of pro player personnel can find an LB from someone else's practice squad. Tough break for Merriman... Edit - Apparently the Bills re-signed Antonio Coleman this afternoon. So there's our answer. Edited October 25, 2011 by Mr_Blizzard

I believe MOST here thought it was a chance worth taking. Barnett has been pretty good for us absolutely. Probowl super star no. Green Bay cut him because they have guys they are really happy with. Don't forget Barnett is an injury risk too. I obviously wish him good luck and good health but he has a history.
NyQuil Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Meh it was low risk with potential high reward. No big deal.
Astrobot Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 (edited) Julian Peterson-still available. Height: 6-3 Weight: 240 Age: 33. 11 seasons. 5× Pro Bowl selection (2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008). Lofa Tutupu-best available, named to the Pro Bowl as a rookie in '05, a solid 2010 season with 88 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception, but was released by the Seattle Seahawks. After six seasons in the NFL—all spent in Seattle—Tatupu accumulated 550 tackles, seven forced fumbles and 10 interceptions. PDaDdy Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Meh it was low risk with potential high reward. No big deal. Eh, just $10.5 million over 2 years. That doesn't get you much these days.
aristocrat Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Traded not dumped. Nice try. Not to mention Phillip Rivers, their golden boy, was ready. He's a pretty damn good QB himself. QB Bills Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Can we revive the me against the world thread about Merriman not having done anything since getting off the juice and beginning his string of injuries 3 plus year ago??? Everyone tried to blast me up and down about how it was a "good risk" to sign him for a few million. I of course argued that that money could be used to sign a difference maker. Sometimes the difference between a pro bowler and a lunch pail veteran is only a couple million. Nobody could even come close to qualifying much less quantifying the risk but judged it to be a good one. I don't know about you but if I walk into a casino and I don't know the odds of the game...I'm not playing it and I SURE as hell would not say it was good risk. That is just a dumb uninformed decision. I hoped this guy would prove me wrong. I would have been happy if he could have been 75% as successful as he used to be statistically. My heart wanted to believe he could become a valuable contributor but my head told me he was done. Not just done in Buffalo, but done for good. His body is broken beaten and scarred. I feel really bad for the guy and worse for this team. It leaves an enormous hole AFTER THE TRADE DEADLINE and getting rid of Maybin. At this point I don't think he will ever be anything more than an IR spot waiting to happen. relax pal, even though it didn't work out, you're completely out to lunch here so stop trying to act like you're smarter than everyone else it's not like his two million dollar salary put them at the cap and they were unable to afford any other players...if the bills don't sign a guy, its because they don't feel he's worth what he's asking (whether fans agree or not)...it's not because they don't have the money or have their own internal salary cap...i'm really curious as to who you are referring to as a playmaker they could have had but skimped out because of merriman's salary it was a risk-free signing (other than the money ralph ponied up from his share of the tv revenue) that had no long-term effects...coleman is back and you can't really say merriman held anyone back from developing i'm not clear what was lost, but what was gained was some goodwill towards buffalo by a former star player who initially hated the idea of coming here, but then changed his tune and helped recruit a guy like nick barnett so good luck to merriman...wouldn't mind seeing him get healthy and give it another go with the bills next year
K-9 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Traded not dumped. Nice try. Not to mention Phillip Rivers, their golden boy, was ready. He's a pretty damn good QB himself. He should have never been drafted while they had Brees but he was on the roster. Go back and check the threads. I threw out a number and said it was a bad risk. Just my opinion but at least I took a stand and tried to back it up. He was a free agent, not traded. San Diego offered him 5/50 but too much of it was tied to incentives. Brees was insulted and chose not to re-up with the Chargers. Not exactly dumped but the Chargers weren't serious about re-signing a guy with an injured shoulder. GO BILLS!!!
Rico Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 What did San Diego get exactly for Drew Brees? I'm pretty sure New Orleans sent a nice gift basket but not much more. They might have gotten a compensatory draft pick, but that's it, Brees signed with the Saints as a Free Agent..
Jauronimo Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Go back and check the threads. I threw out a number and said it was a bad risk. Just my opinion but at least I took a stand and tried to back it up. Throwing out a number isn't what I'd call qualifying or quantifying risk. You did offer an opinion and explained your position and the rationale behind it, as did others with the opposite opinion. Without any basis for an expected return and a risk factor based on analysis, we can't even begin to discuss good investment vs. poor investment, which is relative anyway when you factor in risk tolerance/aversion. So as you can see, the original thread really boiled down to "I don't know anything but my gut says it isn't worth it" vs. "I don't know anything but my gut says why not." No one was right or wrong, except for Moran who is always wrong.
vincec Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Antonio Coleman is on the Giants practice squad - I wonder if we will claim him. I wonder if they will look at other teams practice squads as well? Probably would not be a bad idea. Bills just signed him OK then. There goes any pass rush. And word is that Kyle Williams' season is over as well. So much for the defense. It's up to Kelsay now. I know.
