Perry Fewell was a better D coach . . . at least he was aggressive, the defense has regressed under the current coaches and system. I say, if we get run (and thrown) all over again this week, time to make one of your courageous moves Chan - fire Edwards, give Wanny the job!

Perrys work in 09 where half the d was on IR and the offense couldn't make a first down was amazing. The offense had to react to Fewel's schemes. Not the other way around.

So what is Wanny telling the LBs---just do whatever George says?

Do you think that Wanny, in daily meetings with Edwards, offers no advice? That Edwards simply ignores it?

Wanny's fingerprints are on this defense--why would anyone believe differently?

None of knows what is really going on in the meetings, on the field or otherwise. The only thing that seems certain is that George Edwards is the de facto DC unless announced otherwise, which it hasn't.

What exactly makes you say that "Wanny's fingerprints are on this defense?" Give me some examples of what this defense is doing (or not doing) that points away from Edwards and directly to Wannstedt.

The defense is still getting gouged the same way they did last season under Edwards. Screen passes are still killing them, QB runs are still killing them, running in general is still killing them and McKelvin is still on the field getting his a$$ roasted. A rookie QB in his 4th NFL game ran for a TD, ran for a crucial 1st down to keep their winning drive alive, threw for 298 yards and got virtually NO pressure the entire game when every DC in the league would tell you the key to rattling a rook QB is to put pressure on him.

That sounds like George Edwards to me.

Greene would be good. Him, or the LB coach of the Ravens. The Ravens D is ridiculous! How did we ever get to OT with them last year?

Never been a fan of Edwards. Wish we still had Lebeau.

This ... but given it is not reality let Wanny have the job if he is not already effectively doing it anyway.

Look it does not matter who I D coordinator is at this moment in time we do not have the DB's to play the game right now.

The NFL is a passing league and most teams now come out in 4-5 WR sets to play against that type of set you have to be in either the Nickle or Dime that takes you out of the 3-4 D.

To be able to blitz your DB's have to be able to cover for 3-4 secs right away and ours can not so we have to drop 7 back in coverage and hope that the 4 rushing can get some sort or push in the 3 secs before the pass is thrown right now we are not shutting down the other teams WR not even off the line and until that happens we could have an all pro DL and still would be getting torn apart

Theres no point in even arguing this, I have brought it up in all the other posts about firing Edwards and 'promoting' Wanny. No one can give you an answer except that the Bills are giving up alot of yards like they did last season and therefore its Edwards fault and Wanny would be a huge improvement because he won SB's in the past as a D-coordinator. Apparently at this moment, Wannys job is just to show up to the stadium and sit in the booth watching the game until they fire Edwards.

This year has ANY D looked good? Honestly its been so dominated by the O's its sad and I blame a lot of the rule changes. (I mean the defender sneezes on a wr or QB he gets called for a 5 yrd penalty and automatic 1st down, lol)

San Fran and the Bengals D have looked pretty good. The Ravens D has been pretty good too.

But we already had a similar discussion about how the rest of the leagues defences have looked BAD and offence/Yards has been way up this season. But all of that has been shrugged off by the torches and pitchforks to chase Edwards out of town.........

I dont agree when it comes to the cover 2....I am glad they got rid of it....

BUT

If we are going to run a 3-4 then lets run the damn thing.....

- Blitzes and Stunts....3-4 is about pressure, pressure, pressure

- Man to man cover.....let the db's jam at the line

Yep. George Edwards Defense is crap. Lebeau was good. I highly doubt Edwards will be our DC next season if he keeps giving up 400+ yds a game, especially with all the Defensive Upgrades.

If Wanny has no meaningful input in the running of the defense, perhaps you agree with the below statement?

Also, the actual DC can't be the "de facto" DC. In fact, many here have sugested that Wanny has been the de facto DC since he was hired.

Some of you guys mentioned that we have not been using 3/4 as it's intended. Its a pressure defense as i understand. If we are still in transition i suggest we move to a full on 3-4 formation asap.

I think Jury is still out on coaching. Its painful to watch at times but we are getting turnovers again. I think linebackers are the glaring weakness.

I am not one to talk bad about Wanny as i was Totally on board when we got him. But besides Barnett we have not shown much lb play to notice.

Disagree with gentleman who said we have no dbs. You are not watching the same games i am maybe.

Wilson is solid Byrd is just getting better and better and do i need to say anything about Bryan Scott? I hope not.

The we have Drayton Florence who is doing some very solid work for us. Mcgee is injured and so is Williams. Corner not sure and Wheatly cant play yet. and i do not want to talk about the Other guy at all.

The defensive line has not looked exciting but that is probably our strength area, if we had two outside linebackers and one top notch corner (love you D. F.!) we would be a different team and be able to play the 3-4 we wish we were.

That being said G Edwards has till the end of the season and thats it. Fewell was better, Lebeau is much better.

Whats crazy is some teams have intentionally screwed themselves.

The Eagles come to mind first as the HC decided to make the O line coach the new DC in Philly, so they have Nnamdi Asomugha is playing cover 2 instead of man against the opposing best WR like he did in Oakland, which is what made him so great.

The Patriots have been playing man in a lot of their schemes with all those young DB's, when they should be playing cover 2.

The Packers let Cullen Jenkins leave in free agency and that line just hasn't been able to keep contain like it did with him. The result is teams are able to double and triple Clay Matthews so he only has one sack this year

The Steelers used to be one of the best teams in the NFL at stopping the run until they gave their LB's more money, now they all look old and slow against the run.

Miami was supposed to have a good defense this year, is Mike Nolan tanking it to get the interim gig?

Anyway, the two teams that that look good on defense and I didn't think would be that good are Washington and Tennessee .

Still kind of disappointing that Shawne Merrimen looked so dominate in preseason and looks so ordinary once the season starts, still no pass rush. I think what bothers me the most is the Bills still can't stop the run, with MD and KW they should be playing a 4-3 and forget the 3-4 experiment

of course this is a pornstachio defense. edwards was clearly in over his head last season and probably was glad as hell wanny became his new boss. edwards gets to call the plays but wannys influence is clearly visible, as it damn well should be

theres a big difference to this seasons defense than last years. just as i predicted, players are much more often in position, which wasnt hard to see coming since edwards apparently didnt know how to coach them to be in the right places. as a result they are now making way more plays than last year, spending less time chasing guys and more time sticking them. granted they have struggled at times the last three games, and certainly had their worst game last week. but to say you cant see a big improvement over last season says ... well, i hate it when guys say you dont know football, but you dont know football

they definitely need to continue to improve, and i think they will. but the idea that this isnt wannys defense more than it is edwards, and that they havent improved significantly, is preposterous

Ravens

Titans

Bungles, hate to say it.

Jets and Lions D both shown flashes of greatness esp on 3rd down

My meaningless opinion of course but some backing from nfl stats; I like to look at pts per game, 3rd down conversion % and TO ratio rather than yards per game

I see distinctions, Meathead, but overall so far one must admit it's "distinction without a difference" in the bottom line.

I think Chan summed it up, they've played well sometimes but they are inconsistent.

I wouldn't argue with the statement, that's for sure.

Again I ask, "What evidence do you, or does anyone have, that leads to this belief?" The D is playing like the same George Edwards version to me. Some new faces, same generosity. Porous on the run, gives up big pass plays, lets the QB run at will, zero pressure on the QB. If the O line can play so much better with essentially the same personnel, why can't the D?

Answer: George Edwards.
