Alaska Darin Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Purged the roster this offseason, cut the payroll down just over $40 million, still made the playoffs, and draw under 30k for each of their playoff games. That team is something to watch, making the playoffs 3 of 4 seasons playing in a division with the Yankees and RedSox. That just sucks.

While I'm a Yankee fan first, I have to say as a former season ticket holder the Rays have been fun to watch over the last few years down here. They have a nice young pitching staff and a GREAT manager in Joe Maddon. With the Yankee's getting older and the Sux about to get Blown up, I can see the Rays competing for the AL East title for the next few years. Truly an amazing season for them this year. Beltran killed them yesterday. Edited October 5, 2011 by erynthered
\GoBillsInDallas/ Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 Tampa Bay owner says that team isn't 'financially workable' in Tampa: http://www.tampabay.com/sports/article1195248.ece Even with a $42 million payroll, Sternberg said the team didn't turn a profit this year. (Give or take a little, it broke even.) That means the bats won't be any more imposing next year. That means the roster will be flawed, and the possibilities will be limited.

And that's the legacy of the transition of MLB from revenue share TV contracts with major network to individual team cable deals. Whoever is carrying the Rays sure isn't paying YES, SNY or NESN money.

Whoever is carrying the Rays sure isn't paying YES, SNY or NESN money. The Rays are on the Fox regional network, or on Sunshine network. It's a shame that such a great team to follow is buried where they are in a crappy market with a crappy stadium. They've got a great manager, a lot of fun, likeable players, and yet never get the recognition or the proper chance to showcase what they can do. Given the phenomenal way they draft and develop talent, that team would be a true dynasty if there was a salary cap and/or equal revenue sharing amongst teams.
