I'm really not sure why people don't see that the TEA Party and OWS protests come from the same place - a reaction to the corporate/government nexus that leaves politicians more beholden to business interests than to their constituents. TEA Partiers want to take control and protect against government bloat and increased taxes. The greatest single cause for government bloat is special interest lobbying. OWSers want to take control and protect against these special interests that leave common people on the outside. Each movement had/has their crazies, their questionable tactics, but the root cause for both was a democratic movement that seeks to relocate power in our republic to the people themselves, and remove it from the shady realm of a non-transparent, bureaucratic government. Both of these movements are populist, and I think we should be giving at least as much thought to their similarities and potential than in hoping for the downfall of one or the other.

I don't remember who here said it. Seriously, I'd like to give props to them for an amazing analogy. But anyways, they pretty much said:

Tea Party wants to revive the American Revolution

OWS wants to relive the French Revolution

What was the Tea Party's aim again?

I assume it was to familiarize inner city youths with Conway Twitty & Ward Bond as role models.

TEA Party never called for strikes and turned neighborhoods into militarized zones. Plus, the TEA had an actual agenda

What do you mean? some Tea party members called For a capital strike

Melissa Brookstone, a member of one of the nation's largest Tea Party groups, pushed the envelope on anti-Obama suggestions Wednesday, urging small business owners to stop hiring new employees until the president gives up his "globalist socialist agenda of redistribution of wealth."

a suggested pledge

I, an American small business owner, part of the class that produces the vast majority of real, wealth producing jobs in this country, hereby resolve that I will not hire a single person until this war against business and my country is stopped.

You mean those evil banks will try to recover the costs imposed by some hastily slapped together legislation which fundamentally changed the profitability of banking? Those bastards. Durbin has "good intentions" though, so its ok if he's a moron and his short sightedness costs you, me and Bank of America money.

The rest of the banking sector should be thanking BofA for taking the heat on this issue since they're all following suite at some point. And for some of these banks the additional fees will be substantially more than $5.

Well said. As much as I hate B of A I can't put this on them. To do so is blind allegiance to prejudice.

The problem with this is:

OWS wants government intrusion into business. TEA wants government out.

OWS people need to understand that what they want in principle....is not achievable in practice. No amount of howling "yes we can" makes this not so. On the other hand, the TEA party's goals are achievable, straightforward and easy by comparison.

The goals are somewhat aligned, but, as CRA, Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac have made BLATANTLY obvious....Government needs to stick to what it is supposed to be doing: enforcing the law. If the banks are too big, then enforce the Anti-trust laws. Period. Do not get into the banking business.

If people lose money, tough. If people who can't afford a house don't get one, tough. In practice, and although these are noble motives, the government has proven its inability to handle these jobs, and worse, it uses the dumbest methods possible. Political agendas which are contrary to the normal business process are inserted, thereby detracting, or in Fannie's case, destroying it.

OWS people are right about 1 thing: the government types have found a way to make $$$ from business. We need to force business out of government too, without free speech issues....but we also need to do the same with unions, and every other big special interest group. Best way to do that I know is to get rid of "career" government people in everything but the military and law enforcement. This includes the staff, bosses, and of course elected officials. Should be a "service", not a career.

I've been wondering this for years why some people are in congress for 50 years. Most of them start their re-election campaign the day they get elected. It causes them to get in touch with the money, the money is and always has been with big business and unions so they have all the power.

I actually emailed my congressman and Senator about this before. I never heard back shockingly. If OWS can figure out a way to put term limits on our legislatures like they have on our presidents, I would be impressed and would think that would be great in the long run.

This isn't a democracy anymore. I agree with OWS on that. Its an oligarchy. The people that figured that out have found ways to exploit it and be successful as a result. They shouldnt be faulted for that, I want to be in that group personally. But I get where these people are coming from. As a kid who is just about to graduate college and is scared shitless about his future, I get it. I also get that there is a system in place. If I want a piece of the pie, I better figure out the game.

Congratulations, you are now a pragmatist. Apply that to everything in life except for the people you love...and you'll probably be fine.
