DC Tom
Is this for real? Really? Yeah...and actually, for some exotic woods (including ebony, Indian rosewood, and some mahogony), kind of a big deal. But the amendment to the Lacey act went to an insane level in assuming that all imported wood must be tracked like an endangered species, irrespective of what CITES says (the international organization that monitors trade in endangered wood). But this is an insanely nit-picking application of the law. The point here seems to be nothing more than is sawn lumber "finished" lumber if you intend to use it further - that is, if Gibson receives wood it claims as "finished", then proceeds to make a guitar out of it, is the wood really "finished," given that it wasn't a guitar when Gibson received it? Basically, even though Gibson uses CITES-certified sustainable sources, they're being accused of trafficking in illegally harvested exotic species because someone might have misued a word on government form. While keeping in mind that the Justice department is apparently using a different definition of "finished" than is India, whose law the Justice department is interpreting independently from India under the Lacey Act. Nanker
Is this for real? Really? Absolutely. DCT about said it all... Obviously, the only solution is for Gibson to close its US plant and open a new plant in India. Except for this from GBID. This is about on a par with local department of health officials shutting down church bake sales, except we're talking about world class musical instruments here. Who knew that Gibson was at the heart of an international conspiracy of such epic proportions?
Jim in Anchorage
At its core, the Lacey Act makes it illegal to import plants or wildlife into the U.S. if those goods are harvested in a way that violates the laws of another country. OK to drop defoliants on Vietnam, however.
Chef Jim
Who knew that Gibson was at the heart of an international conspiracy of such epic proportions? Oh but they are. The CEO is a donor to the Republican party.
