LabattBlue Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) It appears one thing has become clear to Chan....when you have a QB who is excelling, you don't take him off the field to be replaced by gimmick formations. Between being rendered useless on kickoff returns(due to kickoffs that cannot be returned), and not touching the ball for more than 2 or 3 plays a game out of the wildcat, Smith seems to be a guy who is destined to make a lot of money for not doing a heck of a lot. Kelly the Dog Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Don't agree. The Wildcat has been very valuable in the three games. I totally agree that Chan did the right thing by keeping the hot hand in there and not messing with Fitz, but I am willing to bet you that by the end of the year, and probably by mid-season, you will be loving the signing of Brad Smith and the use of the wildcat, especially short yardage. There just wasn't a lot of call for it in this game, partly by chance that there wasn't a lot of 3-1 and 3-2 or 4-1. And Fitz has been golden in the redzone on short passes. I also suspect that Chan figured Bellicheat may have come up with some ways to stop it.
Phlegm Alley Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Looking forward to using the Wildcat on 3 and Short and instead of Smith running, having him pass for a big play.
bills_fan_in_raleigh Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I saw on one formation in Wildcat they had Fitz split and seemed to me totally uncovered by a corner with everyone sneaking up to the line. If I am Chan I have Fitz take 2 steps back , Have Smith Lateral pass it to Fitzy and hit Stevie or Donald streaking down the other side. Plus be neat to see sort of some option type runs with Smith pitching to freddie or CJ
LabattBlue Posted September 27, 2011 Author Posted September 27, 2011 Looking forward to using the Wildcat on 3 and Short and instead of Smith running, having him pass for a big play. Smith threw a whopping 7 passes(completing 4) in 4 years as a Jet. If he has a big play in him using his arm, I hope the Bills save it for a big moment in a game.
judman Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Have not needed it yet. Like the others said, keep the hot hand on the field.
BuffaloBillsForever Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 (edited) I disagree with the OP. Brad Smith is VERY valuable to this team and will continue to be so. Brad Smith in the wildcat is our best shot at getting first downs in short yardage situations. It is so valuable to have a guy that can move the chains like that. Dorkington Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I think he's valuable, but simply hasn't been needed much yet. He's picked up some big first downs for us already. I'd like to see him used as a receiver more, but it seems his hands are a bit shaky.

Also, other teams have to prepare for it. The bills can run zero plays with it but it has soooome value.
reddogblitz Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I'm not sold on Smith being a big part of the team either. If it's 3rd and short, I like our chances of handing it Fred or Fitz throwing a short pass at least as much if not more than bringing Brad in to get it. And the new rules have rendered him useless on KOs. You could put Elmer Fudd back there on KOs and have as much success. Not Brad's fault, it's Roger's.
Billsrhody Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Brad Smith will come in handy once teams start game planning to stop Fitz and the passing attack. Using the wildcat is a great way to keep the defense guessing and I wouldnt be surprised if using that formation becomes a major factor in 1 or 2 wins this year. Keep giving Brad a few touches a game and he's going to eventually burn the D. This guys a play maker and he's eventually going to show up big.

You have to keep some aces up your sleeve. PTR

I'm also hoping the same type of thing happens with Spiller.
Captain Hindsight Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Brad Smith was an enormous pickup. He gets first downs, that value cannot be diminished. perhaps his biggest value tho.... It hurt the Jets, much more than they are willing to admit

I think playing way ahead or way behind probably has a big say in this, we haven't seen much of what it can be but there is plenty of season to go.
reddogblitz Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 It's not that I don't like Brad, I do. But come on, he's worth it because he can pick up 3rd and 1s? Can't Fred or Fitz do that? He's gotta do more than picking up 3rd and 1s before I say he's a valuable asset for this team.
Scrappy Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Just because a 7 doesn't normally help you win a poker hand, doesn't mean it can't help you on the flop.
BRH Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I also suspect that Chan figured Bellicheat may have come up with some ways to stop it. This. The point is that Belicheat had to prepare for it and there's no doubt in my mind that he thought, or feared, that the Wildcat was going to be a bigger part of our offense on Sunday. I love that we beat that f'er straight up.
Stealth Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 As someone who lives in NJ and watched a lot of Jet's games take it from me. Brad Smith's value won't be measured in statistics, but over the course of the season as was shown in 2 of the first 3 games he will be very useful in 3rd and short situations. With the kicking game rule changes maybe not as effective, and what I believe to be the most important. Brad Smith may not be a huge "impact player" for us, but the Jet's will sure as hell miss him.
