ExiledInIllinois
And here I sit on a 20 year old DoD chair that squeaks... I can't even get a pair of 20 dollar binoculars to see what the people across the river are doing. I'm just as fed up with government waste like everyone else but catering is where hotels make their money. A saw $16 for a muffin and I thought "yeah..so what?" +4x times the cost? We got outside quotes for our HVAC system that was well under 100k... Once the wheels of gov't got innvolved, it was over 400k. 400 k? And the system is crap... That is where they make their money? Come on, that is unreasonable. 20k to take a few samples of paint off the pipes to check for Pb? Then the ops end of where I work is ready to fall into the river. It is the both the gov't and contractor that are to blame... They are in bed together. We have lost all common sense.

Not sure what the government paid for an HVAC system has to do with what the Hilton charges for catering but then again I have to consider the source. And yes catering is where Hotels make a good deal of their money. Why do you think every major hotel has a ballroom that seats 800 or more? And yes catering is where Hotels make a good deal of their money. Why do you think every major hotel has a ballroom that seats 800 or more? You are such a dolt. Both (HVAC and muffins) are gov't waste... You don't spend 4x the going rate... That isn't good stewardship. But in your world it is okay for the Hilton to charge 4x as much... In your world: "That is how they make their money!" By ripping off the gov't. It takes two to tango. The DoJ isn't to blame here totally... It is your way of thinking too. So 16 bucks a muffin is reasonable... Yeah, I am considering the source... If they aren't making "their money" some where else, what are they doing? Waiting for the gov't to come along so they can rip them off while under charging others. Again, it takes two to tango... Gov't bad!

Gov't bad! So you're arguing that the Hilton charges too much for a muffin? Do you know the cost structure of a hotel? How they make money? Yeah I didn't think so. Do you really think they jacked up the price because it was the government?? BTW it was $16 for muffins, fruit and juice.

In all this, I guess I'm just looking in vain for a president and leadership who will bring a fiduciary/literal tenor to the phrase "THE BUCK STOPS HERE." One who says if you're looking to live high on the hog at other peoples' expense, when there are Americans going without, then don't bother submitting an application to work in the govt. A president who tells his cabinet that if he hears about an event in their department where the catering cost for a few hundred people is in the $100sK, s/he will be personally cashiered and escorted out of the WH. It's far past time to tighten the !@#$ing belt and that goes for the entire govt. Edited September 25, 2011 by UConn James

Heck, the powers that be don;t even know what good stewardship is all about. Sure there is always something bent here and there. Yet, ethicswise it is a different ball game between the private and public sector. This is mostly lost on the big wigs that cross over to the public sector... They don't get it worse than Joe Schmoe. It all starts with going into the public sector... One doesn't go in for personal gain or to get rich. Same with pensions... It isn't about living dreams and lavish lives more so than just simple stability upon retirement. Somewhere people have really confused these concepts and ethics. DoJ. Yes it is @ 600k. Simply starts with the meeting itself. Another useless meeting. "Meetinged out." Too many chiefs, not enough indians. The whole meeting in itself was probably worthless. What ever happened to BYO Lunch? Why the heck is the employer picking up stuff like lunch? You are an idiot. You are arguing against what you believe. To each own. Don't even begin to know who I am. You are the idiot that thinks they know me or what I believe. Now what exactly do you think I believe? Boost... I guess it is all you have left because I don't fit your preconceived notions. ExiledInIllinois
You can follow his "argument"? Honestly, I don't expect many of the regulars here can. Yet, there are many higher thinkers that that can. I am truly sorry that you and others of your ilk can't. Yet, it isn't my job to change you. Though, you do find the need to respond to my posts. People/enitities simply are too wrapped up in themselves with self-importance. People like Chef Jim and others take themsleves and what they do way too seriously... Nothing like defending a 35 dollar muffin/cookie/drink lunch that almost exceeds the whole daily gov't per diem food rate. "It is how they make their money!"
