You obviously didn't watch his speech; you're one of the people he talked about, those who try to demonize unions instead of recognizing that they played a vital role in the growth of the middle class. Unions didn't make the bad business decisions to continue to build gas-guzzling cars when consumer demand was switching to smaller, more fuel-efficient cars; management made those decisions. ....lybob
Detroit, ground zero for unions, has 20 percent unemployment. What does that tell you? It tells me that management at the big three were producing cars of crappy quality from the early 70s all the way up to the mid 90s at which time they started to narrow the quality gap reaching basic parity with the Japanese in the mid 2000s, then it took about five more years for that quality parity to start to be accepted by the public and it will probably take another 5 years to be fully accepted. It also tells me that our free trade policies have more correlation with the decline of the middle-class than anything with the Unions. Union membership peaked in 1954 at 28.3% and has declined since, 2009 statistics has union membership at 7.6%- if your theory of Unions destroying the middle-class were true wouldn't the middle-class be getting stronger and stronger as Union membership declined. Really? It tells me they don't build cars in Detroit anymore. Which still has ****-all to do with unions, Dave...even outside of Detroit, the UAW has plenty of influence. Or, to put it more simply: this is a really stupid argument you two are having. And who cares if Obama gave a speech to a union on Labor Day? When doesn't a president give a speech to a union on Labor Day? Bush did it at least four times in his presidency. Typical idiotic Dave_in_Elma pointless thread. Magox
Let's not fool ourselves here, Unions obviously aren't the sole cause of the downfall of US Manufacturing in the US, more than anything cheap labor in emerging market economies is the main culprit, but Unions definitely played a role and accelerated the precipitous decline. For crying out loud, even when Ford had record auto sales in the Housing bubble era, they were still losing money hand over fist. Why? I don't know, maybe because of the average worker salary with benefits totaling over $55 an hour, add in retirees and it came out to nearly $70. Let's also not forget what the public unions have done to decimate local and state level governments. They are the by far the biggest reason why peoples property and other taxes have gone up. Don't blame the Unions, because it's their job to always ask for more, blame the politicians that have been corrupted with their money. They strike deals and insure them money to help defend their seats, in return they get ridiculous unfunded pension benefits, yeah "unfunded" my ass, more like funded by you and me. Public Unions have sucked the money out of the US taxpayer for years and the good news is that it's beginning to change. About damn time!!

Alaska Darin
Union greed in contract negotiation has nothing to do with putting a company at a competitive disadvantage right ? Nah. Everything that goes wrong is management's fault and everything that's awesome was because of unions. Union Yes! When all else fails, start the name calling. It's in the Dems playbook. Please. Check your history Joe. Unions were very much complicit in the downfall of the big three. Because of the deals between UAW & the Big Three, making small cars was unprofitable, so the automakers kicked the can down the road as there was ample demand for trucks & SUVs. Until the demand for big vehicles stopped.
1billsfan
http://www.hapblog.com/2011/09/biden-at-afl-cio-rally-you-are-only.html Barbarians? It's clear Obama is promoting this kind of mob speech by showing no attempts to squelch the rhetoric. This guy is all about creating divisions. Deep down he's a radical only interested in maintaining the instability of this country. He's the opposite of his first speech to the American public at the 2004 DNC convention. Obama is ALL about promoting… red states vs blue states blacks vs whites socialism vs capitalism poor vs rich public unions vs taxpayers The MSM's job of being the PR firm of the Obama party continues... http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2011/09/06/cnns-john-king-interviews-hoffa-without-asking-about-son-b-hes-remark Given the hyper-bipartisan atmosphere, it's outrageous Hoffa was never asked about that comment. I'm starting to think maybe a boring, yet non-bomb throwing guy like Romney would be the best option for America in 2012.
