BillsObserver Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 (edited) AdamSchefter Adam Schefter Former Patriots TE Lee Smith was claimed on waivers by Buffalo. Former Cowboys CB Josh Thomas claimed on waivers by Carolina. Just a few quotes on him: "Smith had a strong start to camp, and was ahead of Yeatman on the depth chart for the first preseason game. But Yeatman made his move in the second preseason game when he had a chance to play with the starters and seized the chance. " - http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4701750/te-smith-told-he-will-be-waived "Smith was a big, mature player who was selected for his ability to contribute right away. Instead, he struggled to get open and was knocked back blocking. Meanwhile, Yeatman, the former lacrosse player, impressed. He’s raw, but there is room to learn." -http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/rap_sheet/index.php/2011/09/03/patriots-cut-fifth-round-pick-te-lee-smith/ Edited September 4, 2011 by Fitzbeardy

vincec Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 So much for the "flashes" that Pianalto showed. "Smith was a big, mature player who was selected for his ability to contribute right away. Instead, he struggled to get open and was knocked back blocking. Meanwhile, Yeatman, the former lacrosse player, impressed. He’s raw, but there is room to learn." -http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/rap_sheet/index.php/2011/09/03/patriots-cut-fifth-round-pick-te-lee-smith/ Sounds promising.

Kelly the Dog Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Some background into. http://m.weei.com/sp...dd-throwback-ti Sounds like the kind of player Gailey and Nix like. I hope he can block in the pros. I'm not sure if he will replace Martin or Pianalto (who would go to PS).
CBD Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 (edited) Another analysis, seems like a nice pickup, I'm sure no one would have complained had they drafted him in the 5th round: Strengths: Has very soft hands and catches the ball away from his body. Throttles down and gets his head around quickly on comeback routes. Uses his body well to create separation. Gets upfield quickly after the catch, shows some wiggle after the catch. Lowers his shoulder and fight for extra yards, and can make the first tackler miss. Tough to bring to the ground. Uses rip moves well to beat the jam at the line. Also lines up as a wide receiver. Keeps a wide base as a blocker and owns a strong upper body, providing a good initial pop into the defender and driving his legs to sustain. Will locate and block additional defenders downfield, using correct angles. Blocks hard until the whistle blows. Weaknesses: Very slow release off the line. Not a natural route-runner and shows no ability to create separation. Lacks speed and acceleration. Regularly rounds off his routes. Does not break down well and has a very tough time blocking in space. Shows terrible form cut blocking. Leaves the inside lane vulnerable when on the line and can give up penetration. Does not always get his hands inside and has a tendency to grab outside the defender's shoulder pads. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1276441 Seems like they like their TEs big. BillnutinHouston Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Looks to me like they are looking for some special teams toughness. Not sure what else they could get from him this year.
Nuncha Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 He going to give us all the Belichek secrets! Yea - Just like Lawyer Milloy did.....
Fingon Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Yea - Just like Lawyer Milloy did..... We beat the patriots that year.
Nuncha Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 (edited) We beat the patriots that year. And that was the last time we did - 2003....LOL! His valuable information helped us beat them once the past 8 years. Edited September 4, 2011 by Azucho98
BobChalmers Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 We beat the patriots that year. 31-0, in fact. Beat the crap out of them. Of course, by the end of the season, they avenged that loss - but still...
Rockinon Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Who gets cut to make room for him? Pinalto?
Erik Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Is he as good at blocking as he was at saving games?

He never got to the level they were hoping for when they brought him over from Nother Dame to play attack for the Terps, at least. He did miss out on playing with Md. in the NCAA lax national championship this Spring, but I suspect playing for the Pats* will be a fine compensation!
BillsFanM.D. Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 And that was the last time we did - 2003....LOL! His valuable information helped us beat them once the past 8 years. No LOL here. He was signed by Buffalo days before the first game. We SMOKED them on opening day and his info was likely a large part of that victory. That close to the regular season, he was certainly privy to 'that' initial gameplan etc. Given that the victory occurred right after we signed Milloy and the fact that we have not beaten them since only supports the premise.
Heitz Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Who gets cut to make room for him? Pinalto? yup - bummer for that kid...
CBD Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 Buffalo Bills @buffalobills Buffalo Bills The #Bills 2day claimed & were awarded TE Lee Smith off waivers from New England. The team also released TE Zack Pianalto.
BillsFanM.D. Posted September 4, 2011 Posted September 4, 2011 (edited) yup - bummer for that kid... How 'bout it. "Hey Mom...I made the team! Never mind." That has to be a major emotional roller coaster. If it is him we release, I wish him well. Edit: just got text. Pianalto released. Edited September 4, 2011 by BillsFanM.D.
