Oh yes...Colts will be in cap hell

With several of their other offensive stars locked up with new contracts, the Colts can focus on Edgerrin James, and Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the team is set to slap a franchise tag on James to prevent the running back from being a free agent.

Irsay has the tag available after signing quarterback Peyton Manning and wide receiver Marvin Harrison to blockbuster deals, and his goal is to give James the big money, too.

In fact, the Colts structured Harrison's contract with an eye toward retaining enough salary cap flexibility to keep James, who leads the team in rushing by more than a thousand yards. Before Sunday's game, James had run for 1,395 yards, Dominic Rhodes 201.

Harrison agreed Dec. 8 to a seven-year, $67 million extension. Earlier this year, Manning signed a seven-year, $98 million deal that included a $34 million signing bonus.

The Colts also have agreed in principle to a five-year, $17.5 million extension for receiver Brandon Stokley, ESPN.com's John Clayton confirmed Saturday.

Irsay awaits his new stadium deal and a league labor extension to make a new contract easier to negotiate.

Pretty soon all these contracts are going to catch up to them and they will be in cap hell. Restructuring Marvin's deal does not make thing better...just pushes the agony away temporarily for maybe a year or two. They will not be able to resign any soon-to-be free agents because they will have no cap room....good luck INDY you better win it all this year or next year or else you are the next 49er cap purge.....

Good point.  But how about getting some defensive help?  Like I've said, put Brady on that team and he has no SB rings either.

Their defense is getting better - which is a product of actually playing together for a little while. The problem with fans today is they think changing players is an upgrade, when in reality keeping a unit together is usually a better idea.

No there are obviously exceptions to that rule (Izell friggin' Reese comes to mind) but the BILLS defense is a prime example of what comes out of keeping a unit together.

The Colts picked the wrong year for their run.

The AFC has too many strong teams vs. the pass--Pittsburgh, the Jets, and Buffalo, a team with fewer passing yards allowed than any team going to The Dance.

Edgerrin James would have to work his rushing magic against the likes of Pittsburgh (allowing 80.9 ypg), San Diego (allowing 80.9 ypg), and Buffalo (allowing 96.4 ypg).

Add to that the spectre of having to go up against one of these AFC teams in yardage allowed per play: Buffalo (#1 in the AFC at 4.4 ypp), Baltimore (4.6), Pittsburgh (4.7), and the Jets (4.8).

And their D continues to struggle and be in the bottom 3rd of the league...

This team is going the same way as the bills SB team....except that they are

not going to make 4 straight SBs anytime soon.

Nah, I think Peyton & co win it all this year.

He will have to go to both NE and Pittsburgh to get to the SB.....

His only chance to have a home Conference championship game will be is

the Bills get to the playoffs and beat the goons up in NE or down here in

pittsburgh.

He's going to have to beat at least one of them. And it'll probably be Pittsburgh in the second round.

On the Colts, the only player I'd take is Freeney.  Man can you imagine if the Bills took him instead of Williams that year?

169444[/snapback]

i think freeney is over-rated.....he's under-sized and is one dimensional if you ask me..........jamal really smoked him last night, put him right on his can........anyone see that play?

How come? I think there is just too much that can happen before any seedings

is decided....

If the colts win against the bolts then they get the 3rd seed and the 4th seed if

they lose.

If the steelers win then they get 1st seed, however if they lose and the Pats

winout then steelers get 2nd seed....

And of course there is the matter of the colts winning the wild-card game...

so many things to happen before one can decide who plays whom and at where.
