So, why aren't the Bills taking serious look at Matt Roth, Kirk Morrison or Lofa Tatupu or for that matter any other NFL teams ?? --- they are all decent LB's at reasonable cost --

I have to think all would be upgrades for Bills or provide great transition with younger guys

Pretty sure we have enough of these types of LBs on the team with Davis, Torbor, and Barnett. Any more and the young guys will never get enough reps to develop.

I really think it comes down to the idea that they want to get the young guys enough playing time to see what they've got. If you bring in a guy like Morrison or Tatupu, he's likely going to start alongside Barnett, with Davis as the primary backup. Now you're in a situation where guys like Sheppard, White, Moats (if they want him to learn both spots), etc. don't get those extra snaps to show their stuff, which makes it tough to evaluate the long-term prospects at the ILB position.

I think the same goes for OLB, where you have guys like Moats (again), Batten, Coleman, and Maybin fighting for playing time.

I don't think that Nix and Gailey are necessarily punting on their chances to play winning football this season for the sake of evaluating their roster, but I do think that they'd rather invest playing time in their young guys to evaluate their potential as opposed to investing money in veterans that are on the downside of their respective careers.

Just my 1 cent.

Personally I'd love to see a guy like Tatupu in there. I think in that situation one of the veterans gets cut, like Torbor or Davis. Torbor is very mediocre, and Davis is gettin up there in age...Tatupu is solid.

That being said it doesn't sound like that is going to happen. Nix and Gailey for some reason feel "comfortable" with the guys they have. I think they are upgraded in a huge way from last year, but there is no reason to stop half way. We still have a very questionable ILB spot (Davis is ok, but old), and Kelsey starting at OLB.

I like Tatupu, and w/ his injury history, he fits into the Bills plans. But he's a 4-3 backer. As for Morrison who the OP mentioned, I don't think we want the guy who Poz replaced.

With the exception of 2009, Tatupa has only missed one start in his career. His "injury problems" are way over blown...But you make a good point, we don't need to try and "force" more players to fit our scheme.

Not sure Kirk Morrison is an upgrade over anybody on the roster. He's one guy where the statistics don't tell the whole story.

Tatupu had surgery on both knees in January 2011. He's not the same player he used to be. Two freshly surgically repaired knees 1) on turf and 2) at that position with the demands of playing that position and you're really taking your chances.

At best, if you sign him, you hope for a really good season out of him in 2012, not this year. He won't be doing much of anything this year.

Frankly, I'm starting to get more comfortable with our guys too. We have a lot of young talent at LB; I'd hate to cut a young guy like Coleman, Batten, or White to make room for an aging vet. In 2-3 years, these youngsters could blossom a la Timmons and Woodley in Pittsburgh.

they also only have so many final roster spots. even if youre willing to play a veteran over the young guys you want to keep, you know youre just going to be faced with cutting somebody in a few weeks to get down to the roster size. why waste training camp space and reps when you know somebody is going to have to go anyway. agents and players also know this, so unless they are desperate they arent going to come to a camp where they know they are up againsta shakey numbers game

i gotta be honest, i am SUPER happy dave pornstachio is here. he has obviously gone over the whole roster with buddy chan and edwards and they feel comfortable with what they currently have. if it was just still edwards i would be very nervous cuz frankly i think that guy sux as his job, but with somebody like stacheman you can have confidence that hes on top of where the defense is at and what they need. even with so many average defenders, castoffs, and young guys i am positive the defense is going to be dramatically better. considering how bad they were last season that isnt necessarily hard, but with a track record on defense like wanny has its obvious that unit is going to be fully prepared mentally and tactically as much as they possibly can be

we know the offense is going to be significantly better with chan having a full year now to implement his systems. and honest to god, due to what i know is going to be a much better defense i see at least eight wins from this team. and if merriman truly does return to his prior form, ten wins doesnt seem at all unreasonable

I agree about wanting to keep the young guys 100%. The only way a vet LB signing would make sense would be to cut Torbor or Davis (Preferably Torbor).

Nix drafted multiple LB's the last 2 seasons. He also said multiple times we will build through the draft....

does anyone really think signing some half assed FA OLB is a better move then getting our young guys playing time.

We are not signing any LB's left on FA...

We just signed Barnett...

Interesting that all of our starting LB's and the top backup were free agents...With the exception of Kelsey who was drafted and played as a DE.
