Simon
A couple days from now I'll be camped up around there for a week or so. Looking for suggestions on hiking, places for a beer/burger/bluegrass, whitewater trips, ropes courses, fun stuff for 15 yr-old boys, maybe some Olympic stuff, cool towns on the lakes, etc.
Just Jack
Hiking - Whiteface mountain of course, though you can drive to the top if you choose. Cool/Olympic stuff - try the Bobsled Run. I did it about 10 years ago when it was much cheaper ($25 compared to $75 now) Ropes Course - Adirondack Extreme, I did this last summer, it's about 1.5 hours south of Lake Placid though. Jim in Anchorage
Lived in Saranac lake 5 years. You MUST fish the Ausable river. Full of trout, it can be fished from the bank in spots but a canoe or raft opens up lots of otherwise inaccessible river and increases the fun 10X. One of the prettiest rivers I've ever seen, and I live in Alaska. Climb Mt. Marcy. Highest point in the state. the alpine environment is pretty cool if you've never seen it. Plan on a over night hike. Don't count on finding firewood.

You could, but it would be a "hurry up and get to the top so we can get down before dark" kind of hike. better to make a leisurely hike up, enjoy it rather then looking at your watch, camp overnight in the high country[i think thats the best part] and hike out the next day. Going down hill is a lot faster and you would still have plenty of day left after you got out.

kegtapr
Stop at Tail 'O the Pup (halfway between L. Placid and Saranc) for lunch. I'd rather stop at McDonalds. When I was there the food was awful.
