Vatican Astronomer: "Encounters with ET could happen in near future"

L’Osservatore Romano quoted Fr. Funes as saying, “Our galaxy contains more than a hundred billion stars. Considering the number of exoplanets discovered, it seems that the vast majority of stars in our galaxy, at least potentially, can have planets where life could develop.” (Quote taken via Irish Central.)

He continued: “The discovery of the new planet Kepler 452b revives the idea that contact and, why not, the encounter with extraterrestrial intelligent beings of an alien civilization could happen in the near future.”

 I remember when these guys were all over the news in the early 2000s for claiming to have successfully cloned a human. My college got swept up in the media storm during that because one of the "bishops" of the cult was a microbiology professor who had lied about it on her resume. Their mission, per the instructions from the ETs, was to give mankind the gift of immortality through human cloning. It was a controversial story because they allegedly impregnated 12 women with "cloned embryos" and made the women sign contracts agreeing to abort the babies if any abnormalities were detected all the way up through the final trimester.

Needless to say that sparked a lot of outrage -- even if they were completely full of shite.
