boyst Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 People forget just how good Steve Young was... He was likely a top 6 QB of all time, definately top 10. I'd take him over Brady or Manning.
purple haze Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 (edited) People forget just how good Steve Young was... I don't think anybody's forgotten. He's a HOF. Young and Vick have similar skill sets and Young hit his stride later in his NFL career due to USFL stop and waiting behind Montana in Frisco. So a guy who coached both could see similarities in that. To say Vick could be better is a bit much, but can he realistically be in Young's realm? If he plays out his career the way he did last season and wins a title he could be seen that way. Lot of WR talent in Philly to work with so he can put up the stats. We shall see if his ability to throw effectively continues and he can avoid serious injury enough to lead the Eagles to titles. Edited July 7, 2011 by purple haze
San Jose Bills Fan Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 (edited) Andy Reid is a great QB coach… look what he's done with McNabb (and what McNabb subsequently did after leaving Philly for Shanahan). Reid has also milked respectability from lesser talents like Detmer. Reid has resurrected Vick's career and gotten decent play from Kolb. Reid also built Brad Childress' reputation… and being a Philly OC under Reid is like being a coordinator under Belichick… it's good for one's career. It'll be interesting to see how Kolb fairs when he leaves Philly. Edited July 7, 2011 by San Jose Bills Fan
Mr. WEO Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 "what he's doen with McNabb"?? McNAbb was the second overall pick in the draft. Reid's Eagles became dominant once McNabb became the full year starter. Reid is the most overrated coach out there. He's a goofball on gameday.
KollegeStudnet Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Anyone who has played for or against Reid will tell you the same thing--that he is a top teir offensive minded coach...who is down to earth and has a big heart! Overall, Reid has been the Eagles coach since '99... has taken his team to 5 NFC Championships and a Super Bowl loss...

I like Vick and think he's got real talent. Now that he's applied himself instead of just relying on his physical gifts I think that his passing will be quite good. He reminds me a lot of Randall Cunningham who was a running QB but by the end of his career he had a real nice touch. Especially on the deeper balls. They were beautiful to watch. Reid is pretty good coach and runs a good offensive system. Vick will take advantage of that.
Gugny Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 WEO's "inevitable injury" phrase says it all. Vick can't stay healthy with his style of play. It's impossible. Way too small. And Steve Young was as great as he was because he had superior intelligence to go along with his physical abilities. I think Vick had a great year last year. But he couldn't stay healthy. He's not getting any younger.

And Steve Young was as great as he was because he had superior intelligence to go along with his physical abilities. I think Vick had a great year last year. But he couldn't stay healthy. He's not getting any younger. You are correct. Vick is dumb as a brick--this is why he may have had his best year ever last year. He's too easy to figure out defensively. He has a great arm and his horroble accuracy has improved some, but he can't read a defense. Plus, he's the tiniest QB in the league. When he goes down, we will see how great a "QB coach" Reid is.
DreReed83 Posted July 13, 2011 Posted July 13, 2011 He was likely a top 6 QB of all time, definately top 10. I'd take him over Brady or Manning. Brady yes. Manning? No freakin way. Manning in my eyes is the best QB to ever play this game. No one manipulates a defense and messes with their head more than he does.
Rico Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Steve Young was 8-6 as a starter in the playoffs, Mike Vick is only 2-3.... Without any doubt, I would have to give Young the edge right now.

Now keep in mind that Vick had a passer rating above 100 for the first time in his career, was the 3rd highest rated passer in the league last year, made the Pro Bowl, and was also NFL Comeback Player of the Year. But according to WEO, Vick basically sucks as does his coach, Andy Reid. So if both of them suck, to what magical powers does Mr. WEO attribute Vick's tremendous season last year? What did he do with McNabb besides make him look like a legitimate QB? Besides being the 2nd winningest coach amongst active NFL coaches right now? What's he done besides reinventing Michael Vick to being a legit NFL QB? What's he done besides sending 19 players to 44 pro bowl appearances since he took over? When McNabb went down in 2006 and had to turn to Jeff Garcia and took the Eagles to a 10-6 record with Garcia at QB. What's he done besides DRAFTING one of the best young teams in the NFL as vp of football operations? If you think McNabb was the key to their success, then you're dead wrong. Andy Reid is one of the best coaches in the NFL. His only flaw is his clock management. As for X's and O's, and developing a QB and his players. He's one of the elite coaches.

But we're not laughing with you.
DreReed83 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Vick was a career 52% completion QB. ONE year under Reid, he's completing 63% of his passes for an average of 8 yds per pass which is the 4th best avg per pass in the NFL this year (and considering how EVERYONE says its almost IMPOSSIBLE to improve accuracy in the NFL. I guess Reid helped achieve the impossible). Before he was a career 6.6 yds per throw QB. I'd say that Reid deserves A LOT of credit.

Saint Doug Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 The jury is still out on Vick right now. Pre-jail, he was an often-injured, average QB at best. Now that teams have a full year of film on him, we'll have to see how he now performs. Either way, without a stellar defense, he's not the type that's going to win a SB.
T master Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 If Vick takes the Eagles to the Super bowl (& wins one) along with a couple of NFC championships then he MAY be able to be considered as equal to Young but until he achieves that it's all a bunch of HOG WASH !!
