The Brian Jonestown Massacre rocks though!

Buftex
Strange how I agree with almost all your tastes. I can't stand the Bores, but the Stones were great! Yes, long-time, life-time Stones fan...I know it has been ages since they did anything memorable (though I loved to "Exile" un-released stuff they put out last year), but what they did from 1963-1978, is, for the most part, as good as it gets, rock-n-roll wise. Jones was a big part of that, for me. His legend, no doubt, is greater because of the circumstances of his death. According to Keith Richards bio, the rest of the band pretty much carried Brian, once they started making money...he was more interested in being a rock star, than he was in being a musician. A shame, cuz the guy was gifted. As for the Doors, I still like a couple of their songs..."Riders On the Storm" as cliche as it is, still holds some resonance, it is just a very cool sounding song. Also like "People Are Strange" and, love "Moonlight Drive". But yeah, I think they were kind of lightweight, in compared to their legend. Morrison had a good voice, but they lyrics are pretty inane at times....a good singles band, but I could live without most of their stuff. "Touch Me" might as well be Englebert Humperdink, or Tom Jones...I sure one of them must have recorded it... There are other artists from that time, like, say, the Zombies ("Tell Her No", "Time of The Season", etc) who aren't really considered great, in general, but their non-single stuff is really interesting, and, a bit innovative... I think "No One Here Gets Out Alive" kind of vaulted Morrison to a status that wasn't really warranted...when I was in Jr High/high school (I'm 46), everyone read that book...Morrison became the heartthrob for stoner girls, and his legend was just inflated... Anyways, I agree, Doors, highly overrated...
bbb
You're exactly right about everything you said. But, I like the Tattoo You album, too. And, that is my memory exactly of the Doors resurgence - culminating in this RS cover: My link
Nanker
According to Mick, Brian was the original Travis Henry. The Kinks > The Doors Don't listen to music much anymore. Don't listen to much anymore. Music isn't the same these days. More's the pity.
....lybob
I love the Stones and can forgive the Doors much just for The WASP and The End.

If you have access to a Sirius radio check out Little Steven's Underground Garage channel. Listen for The Contrast, Chesterfield Kings, Ravonettes, Beady Eye, etc. PTR
bbb
The Kinks are so much better than The Doors that it's not even a contest. I saw them at the Aud in '80 and they were great.......Listened the crap out of that live album that put out in the late 70s/early 80s. The songs that were not their biggest hits are even better than their biggest hits.

Decent artists can actually get their stuff to the public now without record company approval, for better or worse. The current atmosphere seems to be more conducive to creativity and innovation than any other time in the last 20 years, in my limited opinion. I'll assume you're from the Rochester area, since you're tossing out local bands like the Chesterfield King's, but even the college stations like WBER and WITR play some decent new stuff. Although they both tend to play a good deal of whiny-emo type stuff.

Don't listen to much anymore. Music isn't the same these days. More's the pity. I recall how shocked I was to learn of Brian's death. About a decade ago, I had an opportunity to 'chat' w/ Mick via aol hook-up -well, me & 1000 others.. Anyway, I asked him if he & the band had stayed in touch w/ Brian's family. His pithy response: "no."
