Wimbledon 2011 - Championship Sunday

If Nadal's ankle holds up, this final match has the potential to be epic entertainment. You have the best player in the game, Rafa Nadal, vs the hottest player in the game and the new #1 ranked player in the world, Novak Djokovich.

These two don't lose often, and it's going to be one hell of a battle. I'm getting DirecTV installed on Sunday, so I hope they come early so I don't miss any of the match...any of you other TBD'ers gonna be watching?

A soccer AND tennis fan? What, competitive ice fishing too exciting for you?

Well, I would talk about hockey, but I feel bad about how much better my Flyers will be next year...I don't want to get all the Sabres fans mad at me again

"How much better?" They signed Jagr. It's "subtraction by addition".

That's what I like about Flyers fans...no grounding in reality.

Did we? I hadn't even heard that lol...I thought he was signing with the Penguins?

We've been doing lots of shopping and wheeling and dealing so far...hopefully we fixed our rotating goalie issue.

Actually I'm hoping either the Flyers or Sabres make the finals next year, and without having to play each other to get there. uts me in an odd situation otherwise 0:)

I'll tune in to see if the Djoker has a shot at beating Nadal. AT least Novak has some semblance of a personality.

He sure does...he's a character. And I respect how hard he's worked to get to #1 and in position to win the title. I want my boy Rafa to win #3, but if the Joker wins I'll be happy for him. Should be a ridiculously good match.

You're a nurse that's a soccer and tennis fan. Your entire existence is an odd situation.

I have no interest in Sunday's match, but will be watching closely as Maria Sharapova grunts her way to victory tomorrow...

haha, she's definitely a grunter!

The best grunt in womens tennis I've ever heard was that of Gabby Sabatini. That was borderline porno whenever she played in a match lol

Monica Seles was a screamer too, IIRC.

(Wonder if she's still shackin' up with Tommy G ?)

I think you mean "shrieks her way to victory." That sound is not even remotely related to grunt.

+1.

I've really grown to love 'Breakfast at Wimbledon' the last several years, especially.

Actually, it's kind of convergent now with my declining interest in football. That WSJ article last year that showed there's 11 minutes of actual play in a 3-hour NFL game really soured me on the 'sport' aspect of it. I knew that it was a lot of standing around as time ticked away, but I didn't think it was 11 minutes.

Anyway, you gotta appreciate the shape these tennis players are in. Majors tennis is just a grudge match and they've gotta work for every point. Get a drink, get a gel-pack and then the ref announces 'Time' and it's right back to it.

Nadal is simply dominant; great power and placement. (As an aside, Tsonga's game was really impressive. He's going to be one to watch if he maintains that power). I don't know what it is, but I don't really like Djokovic.

And I will be rooting for Maria tomorrow.

Heck yeah, five sets of tennis every other day is grueling. I played tournament tennis from an early age and the most we every played was three sets. Even back when I was in great shape I just couldn't imagine going five. And at the pro level you can really max out these sets with very few breaks of serve...as many as 13 games per set until the 5th, and then it can go forever...at Wimbledon, anyway.

I agree about Tsonga...he really showed up this tourney.

I like djokovic because he's a character. I think the game has really missed that since the days when I grew up with Johnny Mac, Brad Garrett, Jimmy Connors, Borg, Becker, etc. Lendl was a bit of a statue, but for the most part the players back in the late 70s and 80s had a lot of character and personality.

Those players of the 80's and early 90's were great. Even though Brad Gilbert wasn't the most talented I liked his game because he made more with less. He maximized what he had. I'll try to watch the Final match if I'm able to. You're not the only big fan of tennis and soccer ajzepp. Also don't forget Edberg.

Heck yeah, I'm proud to be a fan of great sports like soccer and tennis :D I started playing both when I was 5 y.o. and they've always been a big part of my life. Glad you share my excellent taste!

Very true about Gilbert. He wasn't really a threat to win any big tourneys, but he was definitely entertaining. And yep, Edberg was very solid...some of those Becker v. Edberg matches were fantastic!

I played club tourney tennis as well. Three sets of tennis equaled about 5 miles of running if I remember correctly.

And don't forget Nastase! Kind of a flake, but could be a magician on the court when he put his mind to it.

We used to go to the US Open every year back in the 80s -- really fun. Once those guys all retired I stopped following it.

I'd have paid to watch a Gabby Sabatini porno. She's my all-time favorite tennis babe. Tennis got a lot less interesting after she and Anna K retired.

5mi sounds about right...that was about my limit...5 sets would have been killer, although I would have gladly done it during one of our "challenge" matches within our club. There was a leader "ladder" for each age group and the highest I could ever get was 2nd. There was this kid who really wasn't that great, but he rarely made unforced errors. He almost always held the top spot. I played an aggressive power game that matched up well against his at times, but I could never quite get there. I'm a big believer in that sort of competition when you're growing up...it fosters good sportsmanship and also teaches you how to raise your game when it counts.

I totally did forget Nastase...and also Vitas Guerilitis (sp?)...that guy was nuts too lol. He and Johnny Mac were running mates, I think. Good times! :D

You went to the Flushing Meadows every year??? HOly crap, I"m jealous big time lol. I got to see the US Open in GOLF back when it was at Oak Hill in 1990 or whenever that was...but I would have loved going to see the tennis Open...as much as I love Wimbledon, the US Open matches at night are just awesome. That must have been a great scene back in the 80s...those of us who were watching the sport in those years really were fortunate.

I totally agree about Gabby....although IIRC, Trump was hittin' it, so that sort of stains the image...but still, she was a major babe
