I'm going for the Red Sox series. I was told to book the Westin, as that is close and the Sox will be staying there. (I'm a Yankee fan, but my nephew is a big Sox fan and I'm a big fan of PNC.) But, the Westin is booked.

So, with the Westin out, are there other good choices in walking distance?

Myself and a bunch of buddies will also be traveling down to Pittsburgh for the series. The one is a huge Red Sox fan but I'm just going to get outta town and have some fun. I'm not sure where we're staying but I don't think it's within walking distance.

You'll have a great time. The park is one of my favorite places on earth and there's some really good bars right nearby.

Thanks! Do you know about a Courtyard that may be right across the street from the Westin. My friend who stays at the Westin when he goes for Pirates series said he thought it was a Courtyard that is right across the street?

No clue, never been to Pittsburgh. I just did a search around PNC for hotels using Google Maps.

Go to www.bing.com and in the search box type google. That should help you find it.

I've stayed at the Hilton and walked to the park - it's not that far - fairly compact area as I recall.

Edit: Looks like the Hilton is now the Wyndham Grand Pitttsburgh - it's been a few years since I was there.

Yeah, I hear it's an awesome park and from what I've been reading there will be a ton of Red Sox fans filling in the stands. We'll be arriving Friday afternoon and will be seeing both Friday and Saturday's games. I hear that Bettis' bar down there is awesome and definitely a place to check out. Any other bars/restaurants you'd recommend to check out around the area?

Maybe JR could help me out here, and if not, maybe some of my friends remember the name, but there was this cranking bar (actually there is a series of bars nearby), that is on the same side of the river as the park. The way I picture it is instead of taking a right as you get out of the park to go over Clemente Bridge, you take a left and you run into this strip of bars and the one we had the most fun at was a big place towards the end of the strip. It somehow too was on water, so it might on the other river.

Lot of hot women in there.

I live in Pittsburgh. You can stay anywhere downtown or on northside and it's an easy walk to the stadium.

The newest hotel downtown is the Fairmont, and it's awesome. Some out-of-town clients stayed there, and they were super impressed--gets nice views of the ballpark too.

Thanks JR in Ann Arbor (in Pittsburgh?).........I'll check into the Fairmon. Also, these are the ones listed as being Priceline hotels for downtown. Would all be in walking distance?:

Damn, all the downtown ones are booked!......Are there any tricks to still trying to get a room there?.........Or, do they still have the water taxi to PNC. Maybe stay where the water taxi starts and go to the game that way?

If you're in any hotel rewards programs make a call to the 800 number and see if someone can help you out. A sold out hotel isn't always sold out.

That's what I was hoping - thanks!

I know some people stay in the south hills near the "T" stations (which is Pittsburgh's light rail), and take that in to the games. That might be a good option if everything downtown is booked.

Another option is to stay on the "southside," where most of the bars are. You'd have to take a cab ($10ish) or bus to downtown for the game.

I can't find a South Hills zone on priceline. Do you know what else it might be called?

Here's the two zones that mention south:

1* Knights Inn Bridgeville

Pittsburgh (South Side)

2.5* Holiday Inn Express and Suites

I would go with Southside hotel--Holiday Inn. Cab ride (or bus) is cheap to downtown. Plus, a lot more to do at night.

Bethel Park and Bridgeville are too far south. "South Hills" would be areas like Mount Lebanon, Dormont, Brookline--more suburban, but easy access to the T. Here's the schedule and route for the T. (Sorry--I'd be more help if I lived in the South--I live north of the city, and since Pittsburgh is so provincial, people in the north rarely go south, and vice versa....even though we're about 15-20 minutes from each other!)

So, bottom line, if you can't stay at the downtown hotels, my vote would be for the Holiday Inn in the Southside as your next best choice.

Great - thank you!

whadya think of the ballpark and hotel? hope everything worked out (except the fact that the Buccos took 2 of 3! ;) )

A friend of mine is in the Diamond Club or whatever with Hilton or whoever owns the Hampton and was able to squeeze me in there...........It was really expensive, but I really wanted to be downtown. It was worth it, because I just loved the atmosphere downtown all yesterday.

We went to the Westin, where the teams usually stay, but the place was inundated by the largest furry convention in the world. I thought it was hilarious. After we were finally told that the Sox are staying at the Fairmont to get away from the furries, we went down there.

I think it's really cool that some of the players just walk from there, over the Clemente Bridge and to the game. We talked with Cameron and Scuttero and probably missed a bunch more when we were hanging out with squirrels, chipmunks and the like.

I'm actually a Yankee fan, so I was happy with the outcome. I took my nephew, who is a Sox fan. I've taken him to see the Sox at Fenway, and at Yankee Stadium before, so I was really glad when the Sox were coming to Pittsburgh. I love the city and especially love PNC Park. I've been there now for 5 games, and it is far and away the best park, stadium, arena, etc. that I've ever been in. It is gorgeous!

It was my first time at PNC Park and I loved it. I thought the stadium was gorgeous and the city was awesome as well. I went to the Friday and Saturday games and my buddies and I treated both games like it was a Bills home opener (it got a little out of hand). We stayed about 5 miles outside the city, but it was only a $20 cab ride each way which isn't bad at all. Grille 36 (Bettis' restaurant) was pretty nice but expensive (4 shots of Jameson for $36), and the Tilted Kilt was awesome. Man, the bartenders there were unbelievably hot...so let's just say we spent the majority of Friday there haha. Saturday quickly turned into a blur when we started drinking at Mullen's at 1pm, moved to the Rivers Casino around 3 and stayed there until game time. We were feeling pretty good heading into the game and things just got crazier in there. We had standing room only, which was actually better than our Friday seats and we were standing right in front of a vendor so it just kept flowing. After the game we went to Mullen's for another drink and ended up befriending a cabbie and spent the rest of our Saturday at Club Erotica...you can probably tell where things went after that. Pittsburgh was a great city and surprisingly the people there were extremely nice to us. I would definitely do it again, it was awesome.
