I love PCs - couldn't imagine using my MacBook for real work, but it is my only home computer and to say that because of this article it's lost the edge on PCs for being vulnerable is a bit out there. Now, I know it is stupid for me not to have some anti-virii, etc, but I honestly don't keep anything important on this computer, plus it's 4/5 years old, so if it got "sick" it wouldn't break my heart to have to get a new MB Pro But if I bought a PC and used it on the interwebs for an HOUR with no anti-virus, I'd be seeing blue screen of death (or my friends would all be getting spam from me).

Funny this topic came up this week. This past weekend I was re-loading my backup server at home, using CDs I've used many times over the years with no issues. The only change was I added a new, no name brand wireless usb nic. After loading the installation drivers that it came with, I suddenly had the Google Redirect Virus. It took me about an hour to finally get rid of it.

I did not have any anti-malware for over a year and never had one problem...and i travel to the depths of the interwebs...knowing the sites you go to and protecting yourself with the right browser and script blocking, etc makes a HUGE difference.

I agree. We have a MacBook and an iMac at the house. I am not surprised that someone would start attacking Macs. As apple products grow in popularity the risk will grow.

Don't you know that Macs are nothing more than expensive trash? Donate yours to the homeless in your area and run right out as fast as you can and buy a PeeCee. Then you can begin wearing proper protection and using safeguards like the Wintel minions do: textured condoms and Lysol.

I haven't had any issues with Malware on my Mac, so I'm not sure how well these hold up in a crisis, but... I use something called iAntiVirus, and have been very happy with it. It doesn't use a ton of resources, and scans are relatively quick. I've heard good things about something called Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac, which is available at the Apple Store online. Both are free: Cnet page for iAntivirus Sophos on the Apple website

I've used iAntiVirus on my MacBook for about 2 years and have zero complaints. Of course, it's never found a virus, but then again I've never had a virus of any type, on the computer. So, in the end, I really don't know how good it is at finding and deleting viral threats. But, in the end, it doesn't take up many resources, seems to just run and be out of the way, and gives me a little peace of mind thinking I have antivirus installed. In short, I'd recommend it, as well.

What websites do you go to??? If you don't go to the bowels of the internet and click on every link known to man, you'll be fine with or without anti-virus software, regardless of what computer you use - especially for an hour!

I doubt stojan needs it, but many people need it just to get in the shallow end

I'm calling bull **** on this one. An informed user is better than any antivirus software. I've had this laptop I'm typing on for...5 years now, and only installed antivirus a year ago on it. And I only did that because somehow, my wife managed to find and get a virus onto it.
