BuffaloBill Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I think there are certain guys like Dylan who have great voices, for the songs they sing. Dylan's voice is perfect for many of his songs, and a singer with a "better" voice would not and could not perform the vocal of that particular song nearly as well. Tom Waits is like that. Springsteen sometimes. Janis Joplin. Neil Young. We will agree to disagree I guess. Oddly I sort of get the point as it relates to Neil Young. I actually think he is better live than recorded.
The Poojer Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Yoko Ono While on the best of/worst of subject, I'd like to switch the subject to lead singers that has no business singing or their voices just plain get on your nerves. For me, it's Shakira and Rod Stewart. I hate their voices. Who told them they can sing? Mind you, I'm not dissing their music, just their voices.
Pete Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Donna Godchaux. She ruined some great jams during some of the best Dead years. There would be a beautiful jam going on, until she started wailing. I have yet to meet a deadhead who likes her singing
The Poojer Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 she had her moments where she did add something, but there are some shows out there where she really detracts completely...don't know if i could classify her as one of the worst... Donna Godchaux. She ruined some great jams during some of the best Dead years. There would be a beautiful jam going on, until she started wailing. I have yet to meet a deadhead who likes her singing

Metal Man Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Dave Mathews by a mile for me over everyone listed so far.
Buftex Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Yoko Ono You know, I saw Yoko Ono live, back in March, playing with Sean Lennon...a Plastic Ono Band "reunion"...I have to say, she was terrific...and believe me, I really never had much of an appreciation for her "art", but, as it turns out, she has been much more influential than I realized. Now, that doesn't mean to say she has a great voice...
Zackry00 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Fergie, Britany Spears, anyone with a god-forsaken chorus pedal hooked up to their voice. It's ruining music! If you can't sing, don't.

Taylor Swift is another...her music is pretty awful teeny-bopper stuff, but okay, for what it is. If you ever see her perform "live" on an awards show, however, it is very clear that her "vocal chops" are studio produced...and she is possibly the best selling artist over the last 2-3 years...
Pete Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 We had an old tape where you could clearly hear one of the band members say 'shut up donna' Man those Godchaux years must of involved heavy drugs just to tolerate her. Man she was awful. I wish I could remove her voice from all my shows

Buftex Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) Rod Stewart - Yup his voice is obnoxious! Back in the day, he was a great rock 'n-roll singer...I can think of few real rockers who betrayed their talents as much as Rod...it is a shame... when he was fab, with the Faces: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3P_re8R3Y8&NR=1 Edited May 24, 2011 by Buftex
dayman Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Bob Dylan currently has the worst voice in music. His Grammy's things was terrible.
Buftex Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Bob Dylan currently has the worst voice in music. His Grammy's things was terrible. To each his own I guess....be nice, he turns 70 today!
Pete Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Bob Dylan currently has the worst voice in music. His Grammy's things was terrible. I think Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie are the two greatest story tellers in music ever. Bob is pure poetry. Happy birthday Bob! And I can't find a link to Don't worry ma, I am only bleeding- but here is an example of his brilliance as a poet. It is much better when he sings it, of course- Darkness at the break of noon Shadows even the silver spoon The handmade blade, the child's balloon Eclipses both the sun and moon To understand you know too soon There is no sense in trying. Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn Suicide remarks are torn From the fool's gold mouthpiece The hollow horn plays wasted words Proves to warn That he not busy being born Is busy dying. Temptation's page flies out the door You follow, find yourself at war Watch waterfalls of pity roar You feel to moan but unlike before You discover That you'd just be One more person crying. So don't fear if you hear A foreign sound to your ear It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing. As some warn victory, some downfall Private reasons great or small Can be seen in the eyes of those that call To make all that should be killed to crawl While others say don't hate nothing at all Except hatred. Disillusioned words like bullets bark As human gods aim for their mark Made everything from toy guns that spark To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark It's easy to see without looking too far That not much Is really sacred. While preachers preach of evil fates Teachers teach that knowledge waits Can lead to hundred-dollar plates Goodness hides behind its gates But even the president of the United States Sometimes must have To stand naked. An' though the rules of the road have been lodged It's only people's games that you got to dodge And it's alright, Ma, I can make it. Advertising signs that con you Into thinking you're the one That can do what's never been done That can win what's never been won Meantime life outside goes on All around you. You lose yourself, you reappear You suddenly find you got nothing to fear Alone you stand with nobody near When a trembling distant voice, unclear Startles your sleeping ears to hear That somebody thinks They really found you. A question in your nerves is lit Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy Insure you not to quit To keep it in your mind and not fergit That it is not he or she or them or it That you belong to. Although the masters make the rules For the wise men and the fools I got nothing, Ma, to live up to. For them that must obey authority That they do not respect in any degree Who despise their jobs, their destinies Speak jealously of them that are free Cultivate their flowers to be Nothing more than something They invest in. While some on principles baptized To strict party platform ties Social clubs in drag disguise Outsiders they can freely criticize Tell nothing except who to idolize And then say God bless him. While one who sings with his tongue on fire Gargles in the rat race choir Bent out of shape from society's pliers Cares not to come up any higher But rather get you down in the hole That he's in. But I mean no harm nor put fault On anyone that lives in a vault But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him. Old lady judges watch people in pairs Limited in sex, they dare To push fake morals, insult and stare While money doesn't talk, it swears Obscenity, who really cares Propaganda, all is phony. While them that defend what they cannot see With a killer's pride, security It blows the minds most bitterly For them that think death's honesty Won't fall upon them naturally Life sometimes Must get lonely. My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards False gods, I scuff At pettiness which plays so rough Walk upside-down inside handcuffs Kick my legs to crash it off Say okay, I have had enough What else can you show me? And if my thought-dreams could be seen They'd probably put my head in a guillotine But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.
Canadian Bills Fan Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I'm probably going to be alone on this but I cant stand the lead singers voice for Maroon 5
erynthered Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Journey lead singer Steve Perry. Like nails accross a chalk board. ACK!!
