Saving NOLA From Flooding

Recommended Posts

Morganza Spillway

"When the Morganza is opened, you are purposely flooding some to save many. Yes, you may save Baton Rouge and New Orleans from waters spilling into those cities however you are creating widespread inundation of the Atchafalaya Basin."

They are finally learning:

"Per The Times-Picayune, levees in the New Orleans area are being monitored by law enforcement 24 hours a day, both for seepage, and to keep sightseers in vehicles away. Residents are asked to report any signs of standing or bubbling water."

Isn't she the kissing bandit?

That is funny Pooj! I thought of her when I was posting this... I just didn't know how to include it in the post! :P

I hate New Orleans. It's a clay bowl with a crack in it floating in a swamp on a river near the Gulf.

They should move it a better geographically blessed location - like Chicago.

So true! Chicago is so much more geo blessed when it comes to stuff like this! When somebody takes a drink in NOLA, it has already passed through 3 people... The first person being in Chicago. Sure we flood up here, but we flush it down at will... Sh*t rolls down hill... It becomes somebody elses problem then!

Every time I open the lock, in Chicago, to let a boat go down river... Takes about 15-20 minutes... We divert about 1 million gallons of water that leaves the Great Lakes and heads down to NOLA... Never to return to the Great Lakes... I supposed being geo blessed up here... We are only adding to the problem somewhere else.

So George Bush is trashing NOLA again, huh? Man, he must really hate black people.

The first account of "flood politics" happened after 1927. The Great Flood of 1927 was one of the reasons African-Americans moved from the Republican party (party of Lincoln) to the Democrat party en masse. Back in 1927, they blew the levees in the poorer areas to save NOLA... Promising to pay the people flooded... Of course, they screwed them on that deal... Only giving the ones they flooded, pennies on the dollar for the damage.

Now you wonder why such stories get traction 80 plus years later... People still remember.

i for one prefer not being under the 40 ft of water predicted in my neighborhood if they dont do this. perhaps selfish, but i think its probably a pretty good choice for the rest of the country too.

Depends... Not selfish at all if you are in the majority and the others (the ones flooded by opening the spillway) are not in the majority. That is what the spillway is there for... Kinda like the little hole in the bathroom sink or bathtub. :D

And those that live in the spillway live there knowing the situation; and shirley I am sure they are insured against this...

However, the sad truth is that the those in the minority are probably more worthwhile then those in the majority. Let's flood NOLA and get rid of this place finally.

No. When weighing in on all the facts, you are wrong... The majority is worth more.

REALLY? NOLA/South Louisiana is THEE busiest port int he country (by tonnage). Letting the flood slide down to NOLA, what do you think that does for the infrastructure in place?

It's a well known possibility. Releases are signed when you move in and there are annual reminders of the policy. At this point, atleast they have warning and have been able to make arrangements as best you can. Something like a uhaul truck, and a week to plan can really help in these situations. Still terrible but less devastating. I've been amazed how few people in that area I've heard get really upset. Most really seem to understand and have come to terms with what's about to happen. Good people, bad geography.
