"The reason the unemployment rate is still as high as it is, in part, is because there have been huge layoffs of government workers at the federal level, at the state level, at the local level," he said. "Teachers, police officers, firefighters, social workers-- they have really taken it in the chin over the last several months. And so, what we're trying to do is to see if we can stabilize the budget."

"I do want to make a larger point to people, though, that folks like Karin provide vital services," Mr. Obama continued. "And so, when we have discussions about how to cut our debt and our deficit in an intelligent way, we have to make sure that we understand this is not just a matter of numbers - these are people."

What is so VITAL about a zoo worker?

I heard that live this morning... He claimed that good progress was being made with new jobs in the private sector, but unemployment stayed high due to government layoffs. Isn't that a good thing? Wouldn't you be happy to replace nearly every government job with a private sector job if you're in the business of collecting taxes?

Basically he was avoiding the question of, "what should I do now that I've lost my goverment job?", asked by a pregnant woman who was in the process of building a new home. I think he should have told her to get start filling out applications and renewing her resume....as it's not the government's job to make sure she has a high paying job at the zoo.

He must equate a government job that wasn't created to a layoff.

Not only that...but federal layoffs create jobs: at a rough estimate, eliminating a federal job requires hiring 2-3 federal contractors to perform the unperformed duties.

As far as I can tell, she must have been a temp employee on a (up to) appointment, or a truly seasonal appointment (1080 hours). I have not seen a thing about federal employees getting laid off. RIF's in the federal service are extremely complicated and rarely happen.

I agree, no federal employees are getting laid off anytime soon.

Thus costing the gov't MORE money to pay the contractors? Why not just keep the one federal worker and and in the end have less going out? Just cut the middle man. Federal workers subsidize their own job by paying federal taxes.

I went through a RIF, that is how I ended up in the MidWest... ;):P
