2011 rookie QB's

Recommended Posts

The NFL labor dispute makes 2011 a great year to NOT draft a QB. The abreviated pre season will make the year a disaster for the rookie QB class. The bills brain turst should be commended for not drafting one rather than be criticized for it. When the season does start the emphasis should and will be on filling this roster with long term starters and role players rather than obtaining stop gap interm players who will not be around in 2-3 years. The only QB who has a chance of being productive this year is Newton who will adlib a lot of the time.

How does this make any sense though? Any rookie QB was not going to play this year for us anyway and would have sat the whole year behind Fitz. It's not like he was going to need to be ready to play at the beginning of the season. They already said that even if they drafted a QB they still were going to bring in a vet from FA to camp to compete to backup Fitz.

Good question. Don't know the answer.

In a typical offseason, an NFL team will hold about 21 days of minicamps and OTAs. During this time players (rookies included) have the opportunity to workout, meet in positional groups, chat with coaches, and watch game film. The team also provides them with meals when they're at the facility.

On top of that, in the time between these minicamps and OTAs, many players have a workout bonus or are just conscientious and "hang out" at the team facilities working out, meeting, watching film, etc…all those things that make a dedicated professional an even better player.

All told, this is a 3 month block of the offseason BEFORE training camp where rookies have a chance to get up to speed on the pro game.

In the scenario where the 5 weeks of training camp and preseason are also wiped out, it would make it even harder for rookies to get caught up to being NFL-ready.

So the question becomes, to what degree does missing an entire offseason and/or preseason set back a rookie quarterback's development in their 2nd season?

It's a given that most rookie quarterbacks aren't ready to play effectively in games, but does missing an entire offseason and/or preseason stunt their development as 2nd-year players?

Assuming the lockout lasts until say July, I think losing that much would pretty much eliminate any chance of any rookie QB's starting this year from week #1 , even Newton. I also think it will also hurt any player from looking like a typical 2nd year player in 2012. He'll be betterthan rookie, but not as seasoned as much as most 2nd year QB's tend to look. Granted a hard thing to quantify as there are huge differences between how well 2nd year QB's look anyway from team to team. But everyone will be hurt by it, how much will vary by player.

I read an article in [national publication] by [well-known sportswriter] that said the Buffalo Bills completely ignored their most glaring need in the 2011 draft -- a new starting QB. I mean, these national writers get paid big bucks to know what they're talking about, right?
