NewEra Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 No, he is ALREADY AN ICON for what he did in college, when speaking strictly about what he has done up until this point. Just because the College Season is over does NOT mean everything he has accomplished is forgotten. I know a number of people who ONLY follow College football and do not watch the NFL. To them, he is ALREADY an ICON. THIS IS WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO SAY TO PETER KING. Its not that difficult, and it's not that ridiculous of a statement. Maybe all of you are still up in Buffalo and dont understand how HUGE college football is down here. That's all I can figure... I didn't listen to the Peter King interview, so I guess I misunderstood the context in which he was using the "icon" term. I was under the impression that he said wanted to become an "icon". My bad. In all honesty, i wish he said it in the terms I percieved. I have no problem drafting someone that wants to become an icon, I'd actually prefer someone that wants to become an icon. Now that I know the context in which he said it, it makes me sleepy. I agree, he is most definitely a legend in college football for what he accomplished last season, even if it was just one season. But I could care less that he's a an icon in college football. All I care about, if we draft him, is for him to strive to become an icon in the NFL and mre importantly, the buffalo bills.

When you have finished kissing the feet of the people you work for let me know. Have some respect for what people think. This is what a message board is about. It is not for what you are doing. You need to grow up and get a freaking education.

DrDawkinstein Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Um ... ... I'm not a trained psychiatrist or nothin' but I have a hunch this was a wee bit of an overreaction. Ehh, yes it was, but I also take this Newton stuff a bit over the edge when it comes to people criticizing him "personally". I just think it's unfair, and at this point, way overblown. If you want to knock his on-field game and his lack of pass attempts, fine. But to talk about his off-field stuff as if we know him, is ridiculous. I probably shouldve handled that with a better discussion. But I still feel the same way.

Zulu Cthulhu Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I like how the guy who dumps on Newton for accepting endorsement deals because he "hasn't done anything yet" also defends and expresses his love for Tim Tebow on the same page of the same thread. Explain to us Champ what Tebow has done in the pros to warrant an endorsement from Jockey. He had a decent start? Has he took his team to the playoffs? Won a playoff game? A superbowl? Made the pro bowl? All-pro team? No, none of those things. Yet Timmy still gladly took Jockey's money. But you always wanted Tebow on the Bills and after seeing him play you want him even more. Wow. But Newton shouldn't have an endorsement because he hasn't "done anything." And Cam talking about the endorsement deal is "terrifying" to you. What a double standard. No wonder your opinion is being attacked.

Nanker Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Gruden's QB Camp with Newton, Gabbert, Locker & Mallett. Newton's going to have a steep learning curve regarding play calling in the NFL.
DrDawkinstein Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I didn't think you overreacted ... Ha, I know, I was saying I kinda pushed him to that overreaction I'd call getting a statue built in your honor as a 21 yo classifying as icon status. Bingo! Come on down south to Georgia and Alabama and see how much of an icon he already is.
KD in CA Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 I'd call getting a statue built in your honor as a 21 yo classifying as icon status. By that standard I guess Nick Saban and Danny Wuerffel are 'icons' too! And I presume this means that Tebow is a diety!
DrDawkinstein Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 By that standard I guess Nick Saban and Danny Wuerffel are 'icons' too! And I presume this means that Tebow is a diety! Wuerffel never did it all on his own, but yes, Saban and Tebow and revered as Gods down here. College Football = VERY Serious Business in the south. It's bigger than the NFL.
1B4IDie Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 By that standard I guess Nick Saban and Danny Wuerffel are 'icons' too! And I presume this means that Tebow is a diety! Was that sarcasm because yes Nick Saban is an icon and yes Tebow is a diety. Have you ever been to the Florida area anywhere between Jacksonville and Tampa? They're still dudes with pickup trucks with #15 in blue and orange all over. Tim Tebow is definitely considered a diety in that area, no joke. Its a very strange fascination. Tim Tebow would win a presidential nomination in Florida if he were able to run for election. Without question he would carry the Florida electoral votes.
KD in CA Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Wuerffel never did it all on his own What does that mean? Did what on his own? Who ever did anything on their own on a football field? The rationale was the existence of statue. Is there or is there not a statue of Wuerffel in FL? Was that sarcasm because yes Nick Saban is an icon and yes Tebow is a diety. Have you ever been to the Florida area anywhere between Jacksonville and Tampa? They're still dudes with pickup trucks with #15 in blue and orange all over. What exactly is Nick Saban an icon of? A douchebag that goes back on his word? You guys are badly overrating local worship, not to mention still not understanding what the word 'icon' means. By your standards there must be tens of thousands of 'icons' around the country -- every one time high school/college legend that had their moment in the sun. Every year some college player wins the Heisman or stars on his team that wins a championship and someone else coaches them there. Ditto in basketball and 50 other sports -- (congratuations on your new icon status, Kimba Walker!). We must be minting icons at a pretty good clip these days, huh? And I see dudes with stickers of Calvin peeing on their pickups too; doesn't really mean much. Of course, Calvin would be more of an icon than any college football player this side of Jim Brown, but that's another matter. Tim Tebow would win a presidential nomination in Florida if he were able to run for election. Without question he would carry the Florida electoral votes. I'm sure he'd do great in Tallahassee and Miami. Anyway, so sorry to have interrupted the Newton man-love fest. Carry on with your work.
1B4IDie Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Anyway, so sorry to have interrupted the Newton man-love fest. Carry on with your work. You crack me up KD, keep the jokes coming.
DrDawkinstein Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 Anyway, so sorry to have interrupted the Newton man-love fest. Carry on with your work. Actually, most if not ALL of my posts here are RESPONSES to the HATERS. Im not a huge Newton fan. He is my top QB in this draft, but Id much rather go DL at #3. This "man-love" is only here because of all the folks who decide to take one little blurb that the media is harping on and turn this kid into a monster. When NONE of us have talked to him or ever met him. Pick apart his On-Field play all you want. That is fair. He hasnt thrown enough passes. He hasnt been asked to make multiple reads. He cant read defenses. All valid. "He'll be a bust because he is a bad person because he said 'X'" is just a ridiculous point to try to make.
KD in CA Posted April 21, 2011 Posted April 21, 2011 "He'll be a bust because he is a bad person because he said 'X'" is just a ridiculous point to try to make. I didn't say any of that. I said refering to him an in icon because he won a college championship is a ridiculous point to try to make. He's another in a long line of college run-and-shoot QB; outside of Vick (and not even him until he got to Philly and learned to play QB), that style rarely translates into NFL success. You can hedge your bets all you want by saying you'd rather draft for defense, but it's pretty clear you are dying for the Bills to draft him
