Fezmid Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Everyone who's been here awhile knows that I'm not a fan of wireless routers and while I broke down and use one myself, I still think it's a bad idea overall. Here's a Buffalo man who had his house raided with assault weapons trained on him all because his neighbor downloaded child pornography using his wireless router. http://www.neowin.net/news/man-suspected-of-child-porn-simply-didnt-secure-wireless-router http://www.msnbc.msn...ience-wireless/
BuffaloBill Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Ouch ... mine are protected but ... holy crap .... that situation is both sick and scary
Beerball Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 There's really nothing wrong with stealing someone's unprotected wireless signal. It's like downloading songs for free. It's out there so it is OK.
Fezmid Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 There's really nothing wrong with stealing someone's unprotected wireless signal. It's like downloading songs for free. It's out there so it is OK It's actually nothing like downloading songs off the internet... Not even close. From the article: "The question," said Kerr, "is whether it's unauthorized access and so you have to say, 'Is an open wireless point implicitly authorizing users or not? We don't know," Kerr said. "The law prohibits unauthorized access and it's just not clear what's authorized with an open unsecured wireless." Considering an unsecured network is literally broadcasting itself (from a technical point of view) saying, "Here I am, my name is this, come join me please," and Windows (and other devices) can automatically connect to an unsecured network without prompting... it's definitely a very gray area.

Really? Three agents with handguns and a pair of cuffs wouldn't be enough to control such a violent criminal?
Stl Bills Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Child pornography is awful...but assault weapons? Really? Three agents with handguns and a pair of cuffs wouldn't be enough to control such a violent criminal? Who gives a sh*t what type of guns they used?
DC Tom Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Child pornography is awful...but assault weapons? Really? Three agents with handguns and a pair of cuffs wouldn't be enough to control such a violent criminal? 1) Welcome to zero-tolerance. 2) More seriously, it's not uncommon for the mob to be involved in child porn.
BuffaloBill Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 1) Welcome to zero-tolerance. 2) More seriously, it's not uncommon for the mob to be involved in child porn. I suppose it also has to do with the fact that Law enforcement has no idea what they are about to walk into.
Roger Goodell Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Experts say wireless routers come with encryption software, but setting it up means a trip to the manual. Well there you go, he would have had to read the manual! It's pretty hard to prevent this type of thing from happening when you make people go to such Herculean efforts.
McBeane Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 He found it too hard to set up a password? I don't care how technologically challenged you are, if you can read, there is no excuse.
DC Tom Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 I suppose it also has to do with the fact that Law enforcement has no idea what they are about to walk into. Or, as I called it, #2.
BuffaloBill Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Or, as I called it, #2. I am not disputing your potential mob connection. I was simply referring to the idea that it could be some highly armed guy acting on his own with little to lose. Gun battles with police have never happened under these circumstances though.
/dev/null Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 No please leave it open. There's plenty of people who enjoy free intarweb access on your dime. Wouldn't want to disappoint them would you?
Jim in Anchorage Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 1) Welcome to zero-tolerance. 2) More seriously, it's not uncommon for the mob to be involved in child porn. The "mob"? Who is that?

I was simply referring to the idea that it could be some highly armed guy acting on his own with little to lose. Gun battles with police have never happened under these circumstances though. By that logic, why go in at all? Better to blow up his !@#$ing house. The "mob"? Who is that? Colloquial term for Cosa Nostra.
McBeane Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 roger, do you happen to have a dollar i can borrow? times are about to get real tough now that the lockout is ending. sincerely, ralph wilson Wow, you are really misinformed aren't you? If you don't remember, Ralph was one of only two owners that opposed the CBA the last time they negotiated it. But keep on your crusade, looks like you are having fun.
rockpile Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Some ISPs will walk through setting up your modem or router settings and security with you for free. The default installation disk may not provide ISP specific required data in all fields. This also deflects unnecessary and boring calls from tech support. ALSO even if the person using your modem for free is simply playing interactive on-line games, it is sucking up bandwidth that YOU paid for, and could really make your internet products - phone, netflix, multiple laptops, and wireless games run slow or break up completely. So give it away.
Jim in Anchorage Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Colloquial term for Cosa Nostra. Right. Joe Valachi made it possible to call it it's Italian name without offending anyone. Particuly the spaghetti snappers.
