PromoTheRobot Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...b_washington_dc What a clusterf**k! I wonder if we can move them to Pilot/Dunn/NorthAmericare Park? PTR
MattyT Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 What the heck happened here? I thought this was a done deal. They had a logo and everything. Politics is weird, especially in Washington.
SF Bills Fan Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 That was usppossed to be Buffalo's team in the first place. A last minute deal sent them to Montreal in the late 60's.

stevestojan Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 I'd rather lose a baseball team than gain a soccer team.
_BiB_ Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 Should this come to pass, for all those who insisted I was dead wrong and this wouldn't happen- The fat lady wasn't on the stage. This is DC politics at it's finest. A lot of the wards were very po'd at what the mayor got done in downtown development, and were waiting for a chance to screw him.

Like A Mofo Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 Now the other question is: Do they go back to Montreal now?? Another city? What a me$$
_BiB_ Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 Now the other question is:Do they go back to Montreal now?? Another city? What a me$$ 161805 I think there was a backup idea to place them in Virginia, but (help me out here) it was still predicated on a guaranteed public-financed stadium deal, so the timelines could be met.
Kevbeau Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 I hear Hazzard County is looking for a team.
Ned Flanders Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 It's one big **** sandwich and we all have to take a bite... I should have waited to get the hat...rat bastards city council. Cropp just out to make a name for herself. Christ, I never heard of Cropp before this whole mess, and I live here. And Mayor Tony's lack of personal skills didn't help. Oh well...it was just too good to be true. Thanks for the coal in the stocking, Cropp!

Cropp, I think, is the mouthpiece for the little consortium that's had it in for Tony since the aforementioned downtown initiatives. It also wouldn't surprise me that the Orioles are playing in there somewhere, even though he was going to get comped.

This is DC politics at it's finest. A lot of the wards were very po'd at what the mayor got done in downtown development, and were waiting for a chance to screw him. 161793 What's ridiculous is that the Mayor made a deal w/ baseball and now the council chairwoman with an attitude has decided she wants to make it personal. Baseball basically told her "a deal is a deal" and now she comes back at the 11th hour with "OK, so now I'll only back the legislation if half of it is private financing". Of course baseball is going to come back with "WTF?" It's just stupid to see these politicians acting like they are doing this for their "constituents" when clearly they are hurting the city by acting this way. You make a deal, you should honor your word. A new stadium on the DC waterfront is the only way to tear away the urban blight down there and make something nice out of the area. What the councilwoman is doing is akin to saying that building a new downtown football stadium on the Buffalo waterfront is a bad idea.
_BiB_ Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 I had a bad feeling when the council voted to postpone the vote-ala Cropp. People think Congress is F-d up. Some DC politicians saw this as a potential windfall for their own pet rocks. No pet rocks? No baseball.
SF Bills Fan Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 I'll stick with Triple A baseball and the Bisons. We'd be an immediate small market have-not if we went into MLB. The MLB salary and revenue structure doesn't favor cities like Buffalo.
JimBob2232 Posted December 15, 2004 Posted December 15, 2004 I have followed this fairly closely for the duration. Living in norfolk Va, i was desperatly hoping they would come here. The problem with the virginia bids now (NoVa and Hampton Roads), is that a good chunk of the money promised to baseball, was done so by the state of Virginia. This money had a sunset clause of Dec. 31 2004, which as you all konw is just a couple weeks away. The legislature met and decided not to extend this legislation. Bottom Line, NoVa and HR do not have a complete financial package anymore, and therefore are unlikely to aquire the expos for the 2005 season (not to mention neither has a place for them to play in 05 even if awarded the team) Las Vegas and Portland would seem like the only places feasible at the moment if baseball wanted to grab a permanent location now. Portland has a very detailed financial proposal, however it appears as if the newly elected city council might not be as gung-ho on the idea as the old one was. That leaves Vegas..Sin City. Home of casinos gambling and prostitution. Granted this is my kind of place, but somehow I just dont see MLB liking it all that much. This just keeps getting more and more interesting...I wonder if those FA's they signed can get out of their contract if the team does not move to DC.

Local media seems bent and some are blaming Tony W...Fox 5 news broke the news during their newscast about 10:30 last night, that's where I first heard it. The talking heads showed little of no surprise, kinda like they knew Cropp was up to no good. Nats cancelled unveiling their new uniforms at Union Station today. It's a damn shame.

You have to wonder. Just wait until MB is mayor again. Maybe they can work real hard and lose the Redskins too. That should be good for some "programs". The school system could use a few more S130,000 janitorial supervisors, don't you think? DC politics is like watching some bizzare game show.
