KOKBILLS Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Sure. But the interesting part of the article is the notion that since there are no safe picks, and since no other position can turn a team's fortunes around faster than a QB, it's better to gamble on a QB early even if there's a sure fire talent at OL, DL, DE, LB. Even if that QB is a gamble. I've been saying that here for Months now...Add to it the fact that The Bills are Drafting #3 Overall and should have chance at Newton and Gabbert and I thought all along they would take one because of this exact theory... Like you, I still think they'll take the Defender though...If they pass on Gabbert or Newton and they turn out to be a lot better than what The Bills have at the time at QB it's not going to matter what kind of Defender we get at #3...Everybody around here and their Mother is going to be wishing we had that QB...
KOKBILLS Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Sam Bradford & Matt Ryan were light years ahead of either Newton or Gabbert as prospects. Both started from day 1. There's a big difference between taking a likely success at pick 3 & acting like a drunk sailor at a casino with pick 3. Selecting Newton, is like a guy throwing a dart with a blindfold & hoping to get a bullseye. He has so many red flags it's not even funny. Here's the top 2: 1 year wonder-which Buddy Nix disavowed when he was named GM. Character issues which got him out of Florida for theft & cheating. While Gabbert is a safer pick, he has no business being a top 10 pick, let alone a top 3 pick. In 1987 Trent Edwards was a better pick than Jamarcus Russell. It didn't do the Bills much good that they got a better QB in the 3rd round than Al Davis got with the top pick. One is out of the league and the other isn't far behind. Why would the Bills take a QB at 3 when they can get just as good a prospect in the 2nd or 3rd round? The risk is too high on any of them to take in the 1st round, especially with the 3rd pick. The Bills don't need a Starting QB in 2011...That's part of why Buddy said it may be the best time to take one...I'm not sure why you feel other QB Prospects in this Draft are as good as Gabbert or Newton long term...Ponder does not have the size or arm strength (especially for Buffalo NY)...Mallett has a ton of question marks...Locker has serious issues with accuracy...Kaepernick is REAL raw, but may have the same long range potential...He MAY have the same long term potential, but he's even behind Newton and Gabbert as far as being NFL ready...Andy Dalton is bit behind both the Top 2 QB's in overall ability...The idea that Gabbert and Newton are not worth Top 10 Picks is debatable...Mel Kiper is about the only Scout I've heard who consistently says Gabbert and Newton should not be Top 10 Picks...Most of the rest I've heard have no problem with either going REAL high...Even as high as #1 Overall...They understand it's a QB driven league...Well at least it's a GOOD QB driven league...Some Teams think they are worth it, some don't...But there is no denying Newton and Gabbert are REAL special athletes who play the QB position and can really spin the ball... I don't see how anyone...I mean ANYONE can watch Film of Gabbert or Newton and not assume with the proper amount of REAL hard work and drilling they will not be able to run an NFL Offense efficiently...Especially Gabbert, who is SUPER smart and crystal-clean off the field...Is it a gamble? Yes it absolutely is...Chances are one of the two falls flat on his face...Is there a chance Von Miller comes around the edge in his 1st Pre Season Game and blows out his ACL?...Yep...There are risks all over the place...But at QB you're reaching for excellence...And The Bills are in the perfect position to Draft a Kid and bring him along slowly...I just wish that Kid was going to be Gabbert and not Ponder...But we'll see soon enough...
