Sheuer used to work for CIA as head of Mideast intelligence (sidenote he's also from Buffalo, think he went to Canisius College.)

He provides a sobering assessment of Bahrain, which turns out is a conflict between Shi'ite (Iran) and Sunni's (Saudi's) ... essentially the biggest hot button in Islam. Saudi's won't allow a Shi'ite stronghold on the peninsula and Iran would like nothing more. US would have to be drawn in if Iranian military does, because Saudi's would get trounced. If this happens he thinks US military would be so stretched we'd have to reinstate the draft ... ouch.

Fast forward to 10:00 if you just want the piece on Bahrain.

Why should we come to Saudi Arabia's aid?

This Scheuer guy is horribly inconsistent. We shouldn't intervene on behalf of one ally, Israel and should for another Saudi Arabia?

I don't think he said "should", he said "would", because Saudis are a key trading partner from whom we buy oil and they help fund our deficit. Israel has no oil, and they take money from us in the form of loan guarantees and aid.
