So one team is getting its group together to instruct them on the company message. Big deal. It's embarrassing for obvious reasons, but I have no idea why everyone acts so surprised when the curtain is unexpectedly pulled back to show something that everyone knows takes place. In fact, what he was doing was absolutely right: keeping his team on a unified message, which determines the difference between a successful and unsuccessful delivery of the message.
