Clemson blue-chip defensive end Da'Quan Bowers' "knee is great," according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Per the source, Bowers has recovered from his surgery to repair a partially torn lateral meniscus from January and is set to perform at his April 1 Pro Day campus workout.

"All is good," the source said. "Is and has been training without limitation for a long time now."

Even if Dareus and Fairley were off the board?

I know I would be interested! Da'Quan Bowers has less risk than Fairley does...yeah, he had some sort of injury that he probably has fully recovered from...but Fairley scares me...well yeah, If he were across the line from me he'd scare me a bit too..Fairley is talented but only has one year of production to show for it. He was actually underweight at the combine...only in the 260's when his playing weight is 20+ pounds more. He didn't tear it up at the combine neither as Dareus actually performed better.

To me I'd take Bowers as he has sustained superior performance! If you go back to all the mock draft guides from last years's draft...and all the conversations we were all having...Bowers was mentioned as a candidate for this years potential #1 pick in the draft...A year ago Fairley's and Dareus's name never were even in the first round let alone mentioned as a potential first pick in the draft.. Bowers has done nothing to change that potential as he's still given consideration for that honor.

Unfortunately for Dareus, but his life has had many difficulties that inspired him to make a sudden change and perform much better...sometimes those things are a thing of the moment and cannot be sustained. He really only has one year of top-flight performance as does Fairley to show for their efforts. Fairley also takes plays off and tends to perform down to the level of the competition instead of being a man among boys when giving the opportunity to shine.

Of the 3 players..Fairley has the biggest boom/bust potential and can become the best of the 3 players, but also has potential to be the next Albert Haynesworth! For my money, even though DT seems to be a safer pick in some respects than a DE, Of the 3 players my selection leans in favor of Da'Quan Bowers with Marcell Dareus trailing only slightly. I wouldn't take Fairley with your pick if you were next up to bat! I think Fairley could actually slide down to the #7-10 range as Peterson, AJ, and possibly V. Miller may all be too good to pass up on!

I don't mean to bash CJ, cause (unlike some others) I haven't given up on him yet... but I don't think it's in the Bills' best interest to burn #1 picks 2 years in a row on players from friggin' Clemson.

Nix on Bowers

On Thursday, Nix will be at Clemson to take a look at DaQuan Bowers, the No. 1-rated defensive end in the draft. Bowers is still recovering from knee surgery that reportedly caused him to fail some teams' physicals.

Nix said this is an important workout for Bowers, who was seen as a candidate for the No. 1 overall pick before his knee issue was revealed.

"It's big for him," Nix said. "I'm not sure that you'd write him off if he's not completely healthy Friday. But it's time for him to show he either is healthy or that he needs more work and more time."

Not to be contrarian but no, he didn't. Fairley smoked Dareus in pretty much every drill:

This is not accurate. Bowers--to my knowledge--wasn't on anyone's radar prior to this season. He had 4 career sacks in 27 career games prior to the 2010 season:

Actually, if you look at the numbers, Dareus was the most consistent of the 3 in college.

That's one thing I will agree with.

I really liked Bowers early on, but his knee trouble (and failing at least two physicals at the combine) has scared me away. His bust quotient is high due to medical concerns.

As another poster astutely pointed out, he has similarities with Andre Wadsworth's injury bug and that can't be overlooked.

Agree 100%, Bowers has been a force since he was a freshman, been double-teamed from the start and has still posted solid numbers. The guy had a miniscus tear, so do 1000 other guys. i did my twice and was scoped and ready for anything after a month. Imagine the care and training he got. His knee is a non issue. the guys is the most over looked player IMO. If he is there take him. Thats our Ty Warren for the next 10 years.

As I mentioned above, I wouldn't call 4 sacks in 27 games prior to the 2010 season "solid numbers".

Granted, I didn't get to watch him much prior to this season, so I can't speak to the double-teams, but most of the time it looked like he was facing hat-on-hat blocking as a Junior (although I remember him faring quite well against consistent double-teams versus Maryland).

Bowers first two seasons were disappointing, but he was certainly on the NFL "radar". He was the top rated defensive player in the nation coming out of high school. That alone meant he was already being projected as a very high first round draft pick.

I agree though, he didn't produce much early in his career. I'm concerned about his injuries and also because he is not a very rangy player, IMO. Not a lot of foot speed. As a strong side DE in a 4-3, he could be excellent. I would never use an early first round pick on a 3-4 DE whose job would be just to tie-up blockers though. That's a waste of a blue chip.

This, and his lingering injury, are the two reasons I'd pass on this guy. Going from 4 sacks over two seasons to 15 last year makes me wonder about his motivation (did he more or less dog it his first two years? Did he decide to give it his all last year to impress the NFL? Will this guy become another unmotivated guy like Mike Williams once he has that fat contract? I don't know. But he worries me).
