boyst Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 Wow 8.9 is a monster. And 6 miles is very shallow for a quake. Why are you lookin at Aljazeera BTW? AP report No cable, stream things on internet, CNN's feed online is slower then aljazeera's. I watched a little bit of it now headed to bed.
Jim in Anchorage Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 This is bad. Was watching CNN and it looks like everything is flooded or on fire.
Nanker Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Wow. Just seeing this now. It's going to take a long time to recover from that. Tsunami warnings all across the Pacific rim. Yikes!
Corp000085 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Terrible. We have two sets of friends, one on the main island and one in guam. Hoping that they are ok.
stevestojan Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Live coverage on Al Jizz Tsunami warnings all over Felt over 260 miles away in Tokyo Russia is on warning, too Glad I always just click on the first link in a post... Aljazeera? WTF.
Beerball Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 A look at the Tsunami travel times More tsunami footage (tsunami waters engulf town) from Sendai where early reports are that between 200-300 bodies have been found
Chef Jim Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 We're under tsunami warning right now. They're saying it's expected to hit during low tide so that is good. Not sure how much is hype from the media. Oh and BTW 8.9 is HUGE!
BuffaloBill Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I've experienced a couple of eathquakes in the mid to upper 6's. That was bad enough I can't imagine an 8 (almost 9) quake given every full number increase represent 10X in power.
IDBillzFan Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 We're under tsunami warning right now. They're saying it's expected to hit during low tide so that is good. Not sure how much is hype from the media. Oh and BTW 8.9 is HUGE! They're reporting waves in Orange County shouldn't be more than two feet, which is really good news. I have a number of friends who work in Japan, and haven't head back from them yet. They apparently have no phone, cellphones or internet access, so I'm hoping that's the only reason I haven't heard from them.
KD in CA Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Wow, that's !@#$ed. Those videos are unbelievable.
Wacka Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 The surge in Santa Cruz Harbor sunk about a dozen pleasure boats.
Chef Jim Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Our video conferencing system allows us to dial Japan to a camera mounted on the companies headquarters. I can't dial it in, it's busy. The surge in Santa Cruz Harbor sunk about a dozen pleasure boats. When I heard that I was very surprised. Mother nature is one tough cookie.
Kiwi Bills fan Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 My thoughts and prayers are with those in Japan. Their SAR teams were some of the very first to arrive and help us out with out Christchurch earthquake.
Wacka Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 (edited) A 6.6 hit Nagano, about 250 miles away from the 8.9. In Crescent City, CA the waves were 6-8 feet. Lots of damage, but the town was evacuated and no one is hurt. They lost 20-25 people in 1964. Edit: 4 people swept out to sea. Edited March 11, 2011 by Wacka
BuffaloBill Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Wow, that's !@#$ed. Those videos are unbelievable. Wave hitting buildings makes them look as thogh they are made of tissue paper.
