America is the most materialistic society in the world. The article was a refreshing read. The truth hurts We also are the worlds richest country, for the most part. We buy food because we can afford to do so. We have multiple vehicles because we can afford to do so. We spend money on the extras in life because we can do so. When food costs go up, people will stop buying it and raise it themselves. People always quote such statistics as though free goodies would just magically appear at the doorstep of some unfortunate half a world away if Americans bought less.
