Nanker Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 done So THAT's where that's been hiding. Thanks Jim. I'll have to spend a little time over there.
Chef Jim Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I would like to find a CSA here in C'bus to get in on a share of a steer and a hog. Wifey goes to the grocery store for a good steak and is tastes like cardboard. I'll go to the butcher and it rocks. I pay a bit more through the butcher - I think I would be far far ahead if I went in on a share. I marinated a THICK cut pork chop not too long ago in Chiavetta's and it absolutely was to die for. One of the main ingredients in Chiavetta's is vinegar. The farmer's market here in SF at the Ferry Building is the best I've been to outside of France. It is a nice walk for us or a quick bus ride. We used to go there when we visited SF and were so frustrated because we could only look and not buy. Our first Saturday here we went and loaded up on all sorts of cool stuff. That's what's neat about SF. Drive 30 minutes or less outside the city you're in major farm country. In LA you had to drive forever to get to farm country.

Not the one I remember reading about.

But at least we were able to get cheeses and bagette to take. We also had great oysters at that Hog Island place, very very cool place..San Fran as a whole is just so cool. Comparing LA to San Frean is like comparing Golisano to Pegula...one just makes you feel like all warm and fuzzy!!!

It's tough getting a seat there doing the market. They also have a stand at the market so now I just buy them there and take them home. Great prices. My favorite for oyster is Tomales bay at Pt. Reyes. They just fish out a dozen or two or three in a plastic net. The medium sized ones are about the size of your hand. So fresh. You sit at picnic tables with wine or whatever you want to bring and chow down. Unfortunately the weather is usually so cold there. But on one of the few hot days assume it's really nice.
