Doc Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) I always liked Icehouse but thought their best was We Can Get Together. youtube.com/watch?v=BzRCYjlIVYw Another forgotten song I think exemplifies the 80s is Wouldn't It Be Good. Over video limit I wouldn't call it 80s music exactly, a lost Dire Straits gem is Tunnel of Love. Never heard the other Icehouse song. And Nik Kershaw was a must-have so I got it early. Knopfler is a guitar god. But that song always reminded me of "Skateaway," which was my favorite non-Brothers In Arms tune. I love Bruce's "Tunnel Of Love," which was a scathing assessment of his brief marriage to Julianne Phillips. Edited February 21, 2011 by Doc
ajzepp Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Okay...keeping to the strict definition of '80s (which leaves out Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" and anything off Jeff Healy's Hell To Pay album, which is a cryin' shame): Heart - "These Dreams", "How Can I Refuse", and "Alone" Tesla - "Love Song" Suzanne Vega - "Luka" Stevie Nicks - "Edge of Seventeen" Don Henly - "Sunset Grill" Weird Al Yanckovic - "I Love Rocky Road" Steve Winwood - "Higher Love" Robert Plant - "In The Mood" and "Tall Cool One" Joe Satriani - "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing" Steve Miller Band - "Abracadabra" Sammy Hagar - "Fall In Love Again" and "I Can't Drive 55" Queen - "Another One Bites The Dust" Van Halen - "And The Cradle Will Rock" Georgia Satellites - "Battleship Chains" Lionel Ritchie - "Say You, Say Me" (and hell, Deathtongue - "Let's Run Over Lionel Ritchie With A Tank") Katrina and the Waves - "Walking on Sunshine" Eurythmics - "Would I Lie To You" Fleetwood Mac - "Hold Me" and "Gypsy" Jump 'N The Saddle Band - "Curly Shuffle" Rick Springfield - "I've Done Everything for You" The Outfield - "Your Love" Murray Head - "One Night In Bangkok" Falco - "Rock Me Amadeus" Nene - "99 Luftballons" Kenny Loggins - "Danger Zone" and "Footloose" The '85 Bears - "Superbowl Shuffle" Okay, now THIS is a good frickin list, save for your last entry lol...I may need to privately hijack this thread and use this list for my own purposes lol.

Dan Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 A couple obscure or lesser thought about ones, perhaps... Modern English - I Melt with You. < John Cougar Mellencamp - Ain't even done with the Night < John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - On the Dark Side <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgloaS4NGyM> Go Go's - We got the Beat < Prince - Little Red Corvette <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDduqH5cci>
Doc Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) Split Enz Dokken Too tired to think of any more, I'm sure you have a lot of these. I have stuff from all the bands you listed, but not all the same songs. And good call on Dokken. If you like them (George Lynch is another guitar god), this is a good (okay, it's cheesy) song with a great solo, both instrumentally and visually: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2lTPuvB-Sc Edited February 21, 2011 by Doc

BigDaddy12 Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Lots of good stuff here, but I'm kinda surprised nobody mentioned my favorite 80s performer Billy Ocean...
bbb Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 In '87, Huey released Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity (and the importance of trends), it's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey, Paul! I hope this is sarcasm, because if it is, it's very good.
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Shoplifters of the World Unite - The Smiths
jayg Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I have stuff from all the bands you listed, but not all the same songs. And good call on Dokken. If you like them (George Lynch is another guitar god), this is a good (okay, it's cheesy) song with a great solo, both instrumentally and visually: youtube.com/watch?v=G2lTPuvB-Sc I used to play in a band that covered in my dreams and into the fire. George's stuff was always fun to play even if I wasn't a big Dokken fan. They were somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, haha.
Doc Posted February 21, 2011 Author Posted February 21, 2011 Great stuff, guys. If you have more, keep it coming.
LeviF Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 I hope this is sarcasm, because if it is, it's very good. 'Fraid I can't claim originality on that one.
Chef Jim Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBRJ6jQfap0 A good WNY/CNY connection with this band. Edited February 21, 2011 by Chef Jim
bbb Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 'Fraid I can't claim originality on that one. Just googled it. Wow - that is so good. I have to get that movie just for that scene.
LeviF Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Just googled it. Wow - that is so good. I have to get that movie just for that scene. Read the book and watch the movie. Both are great.
BLZFAN4LIFE Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 The Smithereens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4JFqfqIPKA My favorite Smithereens song is Blues Before and After, but that's from '90 or '91. Blondie - Call Me For those of you into 80's music, there's a good show (Resurrection Sunday) streaming from Charlotte's 106.5 The End Sunday morning 8 - 12. A few hours of '80's music a week is just enough for me.
Taro T Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) A few that I don't think have been mentioned yet. The Church - Under the Milky Way Tonight Pink Floyd - Not Now John Dire Straits - Telegraph Road Rush - Red Barchetta R.E.M. - South Central Rain R.E.M. - It's the End of the World as We Know It (& I Feel Fine) The Kinks - Destroyer The Kings - This Beat Goes On / Switchin' To Glide Duke Jupiter - I'll Drink To You Gowan - A Criminal Mind EDIT: X'd out the 'standards' and added some replacements. Bruce Cockburn - If I Had a Rocket Launcher Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny Come Home Donald Fagan - New Frontier Edited February 22, 2011 by Taro T

I actually like Modern Love much more than China Girl from that album. One of my favorite Bowie songs.
