DC Tom
On a serious note, the overwhelming majority of middle eastern advancement came before they were muslims. Islam, regardless of your opinion/open-mindedness/head-in-the-sandedness regarding the (de)merits of it's tenets and practice, has had a technologically backwards effect on it's followers. No, actually it hasn't. You really think tribal nomads in the Arabian desert were more advanced than the most urbanized and mercantile society of the Middle Ages that all but invented math, medicine (particularly opthamology), physics (particularly optics), modern astronomy, and created some of the greatest art, architecture, and literary creations of the era?
