Booster4324 Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 How is the computer going to buzz in? Due to this revelation, my money is on the humans. Thumbs for the win.
Just Jack Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 In first public test, it seems IBM computer could make "Jeopardy!" champs deep blue Watson, which IBM claims as a profound advance in artificial intelligence, edged out game-show champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter on Thursday in its first public test, a short practice round ahead of a million-dollar tournament that will be televised next month.
BuffaloBill Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 How is the computer going to buzz in? You had to complicate this ..... sure take a simple thought and just make a mess of it ....
DrDawkinstein Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 This is news? Theyve been doing this for YEARS...
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 leonidas Anyone find this link elsewhere? I've seen the ads and it looks interesting but wow, it's gonna be tough to beat a machine on the draw.
birdog1960 Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 tonight, a 3 day set of jeopardy games starts pitting watson, an ibm computer, against the 2 most successful players in the show's history. i think it should prove interesting. is this the beginning of the real life "terminator" story or are humans truly irreplaceable? ok, it might not be that big a deal but i'll be tivo'ing it, anyway.
KD in CA Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Just wait till Skynet becomes self aware..... The tech guys in my office are all taking bets on the outcome of Jeopardy.
birdog1960 Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 The tech guys in my office are all taking bets on the outcome of Jeopardy. i'm wondering who they want to win....hell, i'm wondering who i want to win. i'd bet on the guy who won 74 in a row though.
eSJayDee Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I think the outcome is very dependent on the rules, or how the competition is set up. Voice recognition, no advanced knowledge (or categorization) of the topics, no external access & typical jeopardy type questions, I'd still put $ on the people. You alter the rules sufficiently to accommodate the computer's shortcomings, & it has the potential to kick butt.

shrader Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 How is the computer receiving the questions?
Beerball Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 How is the computer receiving the questions? Don't you mean the answers?
shrader Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Don't you mean the answers? Damn you. Ok, how is it receiving the answers? Does it read them off the screen? Does it listen to Trebek's voice? Or is there some other kind of input.
Beerball Posted February 14, 2011 Author Posted February 14, 2011 Damn you. Ok, how is it receiving the answers? Does it read them off the screen? Does it listen to Trebek's voice? Or is there some other kind of input. They hear all. (at least I think that's how it works)
eSJayDee Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 The other option that would also be kinda fair is rather than Voice Recognition, is Optical Character Recognition, ie it reads the "answers". This would allow it to more easily (& most importantly - accurately) search its database.

BuffaloBill Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Damn you. Personal attacks are not allowed on the board. However, given this was directed at Beer-o-sphere you should continue to fire at will.
shrader Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 They hear all. (at least I think that's how it works) So wait, that's who they are? That whole thread was just a week long plug for jeopardy? Anyway, I might check this out if I can figure out which station actually carries jeopardy around here. If nothing else, I'd like to see how they're actually setting up this whole thing.
