I think Moats is the answer.

Nix has said he's happy with his OLB's; it's the ILB's he thinks need improving.

On the depth chart the other OLB is Kelsay backed up by Maybin

Forgive the ignorance but who are these OLBs Nix is happy with? Moats and ????

Moats can be a very solid contribution to our defense, he needs talent around him. The question is is Carrington the answer, because Stroud is awful at DE and at DT, Dwan Edwards is marginal at best. If our Dline can create a little havok then we will find answers at linebacker.

Right now Moats is at best a long-yardage pass rushing specialist. And that's being kind. He's a huge liability in the run game and has shown zero success in setting an edge or playing in open space. Did you see the last Jets game? He looked like a traffic cop dancing a tango out there. The guy got 2 timely sacks, but don't mistake him for an every down linebacker, right now he's far, far from it.

That's why I compared him to Harrison. Not trying to say he is going to be "the man" next year, but has the potential to be quite a player by that Key 3rd year. I think it took Harrison at least to his 4th year. Moats is ahead of schedule I'd say.

Not saying he's the answer or an answer, but another player in the mix at OLB is Antonio Coleman who in spite of being an undrafted free agent, had a VERY storied career at Auburn. He was one of Auburn's and the SEC's top defensive players and had many honors including being on Auburn's All-Decade Team of the 2000s.

Coleman played only 8 games last year before a knee injury shelved him.

I may be the only one, but I'm quite excited about his potential. He was really improving before he got injured.

Well stated. Half the problem with the defense is it's lack of discipline and positional awareness. Chaulk what you want to 1st yr 3-4, but too many times ppl out of position over pursuing, over eagerly rushing into blocks instead of letting play develop. We need instinctive players, ones who know the value of setting an edge. I remember the jets play your referring to. I don't give a f about a favre sack if the guy can't get a handle on the basics.

I really think Moats will be solid along with a healthy Danny Batten, in which I predict may be a beast for us.

He certainly showed flashes of a potentially great career.

IMO, part of the questions surrounding the skill level of our LB's & DL center around the philosophy change with the new coaches. Are we 3-4, 4-3, hybrid, and where does everyone fit in? I think this had more to do with our absymal run defense than lack of skill this year. It's nearly impossible to be any worse next year so -with a year in the system- we're bound to improve simply through repetition.

BPA at each pick is my vote and hope our scouting and final decision making is the real difference going forward.

I think a lot of you are overlooking Maybin. Don't forget, he came out after his Sophomore season, so last year still would've been his Senior season. Are we ready to give up on an 11th overall talent just yet? I'm certainly not. Don't forget, he is the quarterback cravin' defensive Wes Craven.

With all of the talk about Von Miller, is the #1 need really a pass-rushing OLB specialist? Or, the real question, do we already have one on the roster in the name of Arthur Moats?

- He had a statistically decent year (33TT and 2.5 Sacks) for someone who: came from a small school; became a starter mid-season; had an injury; and started the pre-season at a different position.

- If you focus on his last 6 games and "annualize" those stats, it works out to 5-6 sacks and 50-60 tackles for the year. That would be a very strong showing for any first year player who started 16 games.

- Moats is about the same size as James Harrison, a MAC product.

I've certainly been on King Arthur's bandwagon, and I think he has shown he can be a legitimate starting ROLB...maybe even an excellent ROLB. While I like Miller, I think the more pressing needs for the D are the line and ILBs, and hope those get addressed early in the draft.

Maybe...but I definitely wouldn't count on it.

Refreshing to read informed opinion around here.

The fact that it mirrors my own thoughts exactly, notwithstanding.

So what you guys are saying is that we should draft rookies that have "instincts" to know what they should be doing before they are taught what to do?

What Moats did do last year, was to show he has possibilities and potential. You are very correct in that he did not set the world on fire. If our other OLB's weren't so horrible, I don't believe he would have been looked upon so favorably by some.

Including, apparently, our D coaching staff and the other team's O (when he sees the field)

I will be very happy if he shows something as a player this year and 2010 shows Bills had best not count on it.
