Bill4Life Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) I love the Bills just as much as anyone on here but as many Gms as I seem to come across on this site none of them seem to be looking into the "future" of the Bills when they mock our pick. I agree with all of their banter on how we need linbackers and defensive line to stop the run, but lets face the facts, If we decided to draft fairley (who is not suh) and a linebacker in round 2 this team would still be 2-3 years away from winning and would still searching for our QB of the future. Here are my top reasons why I'm sold we take a QB. .7 You could always sign FA def players, how often does anyone sign FA franchise QB in free agency? Never! because no team is stupid enough to let their guy hit the market without compensation. .6 There are proven FA tackles to be had in Free agency: Brandon Mebane, Aubrayo Franklin, Richard Seymor.. How about FA linebackers Lamar Woodley, David Harris, Chad Greenway and Tamba Hali. .5 There are no guarentees that Fairley and Bowers don't turn out to be busts as well. Both are some what of a one hit wonder.. Do think the name Aaron Maybin hasn't scared anyone in the Bills organization when it comes to drafting a player who doesn't have more then a 1 great year to show on his resume? .4 Gailey and Nix say it themselves in an interview with a radio station Gailey is quoted as saying: "How many years do you expect to be able to draft at number three and be able to get a guy like that even if you put him under wraps for a year or two, while you’re grooming him? You have to consider that. We’re not in here just thinking about short term next year what can we do for the Buffalo Bills. Buddy (Nix) and I are committed to the long term success of the Buffalo Bills.” .3 Do people really think that after the combine you won't have the whole nation talking about Blaine Gabbert as the possible #1 overall pick?? Luck is good but he is more the product of Hype than a can't miss prospect.. Going into school it was Gabbert who was the more sought after recruit and he would certainly have been #1 in next years draft. .2 Lets just say we take Gailey at his word and Draft Gabbert if Carolina doesn't select him, well then we have Fitz to show him the ropes and to hold us over while Nix starts putting the rest of the defensive pieces together. Hey apparently it worked for Green bay, they still had Farve while they drafted Rodgers, granted its a lot less of a risk at where they picked him but its a similar idea. They needed to start planning for life without farve and even though they didn't need another QB they still took one because they might not ever be in that position to take another Franchise caliber guy for a while. We've sucked for 11 straight years and when during that time have we ever been able to have our choice of what franchise QB we want?? .1 We are just not that good!!!! We're improving and I do see some light at the end of this tunnel, but its gona take some time and some luck (or should I say Gabbert) When you have a shot at a Franchise QB you have to just take it. Key is, is Gabbert a franchise player? Why not draft superstar Robert Quinn at 3 and take Kaepernick in the second and groom him when he has just as much if not more upside than Gabbert?
BB-Gun Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 There is no QB in this draft worth picking #3 overall. If Luck came out this year, most would definitely think he should be drafted. The Bills GM has already said they are going to draft the best player available, according to their board. I would hope even the Bills don't have any available QB's rated that high. Like quality LT, good NT generally do not make it to free agency. It is one of those very difficult positions to fill. Go defensive front 7 early in the draft. We can get a QB to groom later in the draft, or even next year.
1billsfan Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 http://blogs.nfl.com/2011/01/27/wilson-bills-wont-reach-for-qb-with-third-pick/ As for the one who suggested Kaepernick in the second, that's insane. IMO, you don't look at a QB that raw until the fourth. The Bills need to find 4 starters with the first three rounds (DE, LB, LB, CB). I hope the Bills look at either Kaepernick or Tyrod Tayor in the fifth. One of them should be there.
Green Lightning Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I would agree with the OP if there was a FQB worth taking at #3 but there isn't. It's a moot point. Let's build our D.
shoveldog Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 You make some decent points... I think most draftniks and the media talking heads tend to isolate on one source to acquire players at the exclusion of all others. In addition to the draft, we still have FA and we still have trade possibilities... and don't forget we picked up some pretty good prospect OL from practice squads this season. I'm sure that Buddy and Chan have a comprehensive plan to acquire the players they think will elevate the talent level on this team. It's not just going to be through the draft. Besides the fact that second, third and fourth rounders are typically not impact players as rookies. I'm not familiar enough with all of the QB's who have declared to pass judgment. But, if our football guys think that there is a legitimate franchise QB at #3, then I see nothing wrong with going QB and addressing the other areas of need in later rounds and/or through other means.
BoozeCruise Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Plain and simple, we just need better scouts. Whether that be for the 3rd pick or for the undrafted free agent pick. Here's an example (per Rotoworld)... Packers scout Alonzo Highsmith has been named NFL Scout of the Year for 2010. As Evan Silva of Rotoworld and Profootballtalk points out, Highsmith is the scout who recommended Pro Bowl CB Tramon Williams to the Packers after the Texans cut him back in 2006. Williams has been a difference maker in Green Bay whereas none of the cornerbacks kept over him in 2006 remain with the Texans. Also, the Packers are now starting Howard Green at D-End. This is his 10th team. He was most recently cut by the Jets. Eric Walden, the Packers new starting Insider Linebacker (who they just extended) was most recently waived by the Dolphins. The list goes on and on for the Packers and Steelers. We need a revamped scouting department. We're relying a lot on luck these days I think.
bowery4 Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 .7 You could always sign FA def players, how often does anyone sign FA franchise QB in free agency? Didn't New Orleans? Didn't Phily? in 2009 didn't Minnesota? Didn't Buffalo sign Flutie? I think we should pick a QB if that is what Buddy thinks at this point, I really think we need to develop player more than draft one high though.
BillsRUs Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Also just because some players are FA it doesn't mean they wont be resigned by their respective teams once CBA is resolved. By your logic, someone somewhere is going," I'm sure FA LB Posluszny is available on the cheap"
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) In fairness to the original poster, out of the people mentioned so far, for the most part, none were viewed as young franchise type QB's who were let free by their original team. The only exception would be Brees, but even there, there was a reason. He appeared to be a bust so SD drafted Rivers, then Brees played great the next year so now SD had to very good QB's and they let one go. NO was still taking a bit of a chance in signing him as he may have been a one year wonder. Vick, Farve, Flutie, and Warner all had questions or limited life left in them. All four did have some success, but did not become the long term answer to the team aquiring them. Can you trade for one like the back up in Phily. Yes but as is the case in Philly teams often ask way too much for a guy who has shown streaks of greatness, but not enough to be worth what Eagles are asking for. Having said that unless some player comes out of the combines worthy of the #3 overall, can't see it happening. So far no QB's are in that mode. Edited February 3, 2011 by Ed_Roch
Ghost of Rob Johnson Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 (edited) .7 You could always sign FA def players, how often does anyone sign FA franchise QB in free agency? Didn't New Orleans? Weren't there some questions regarding Brees? Was he a franchise QB when he signed with NO, or after? Didn't Phily? in 2009 didn't Minnesota? Didn't Buffalo sign Flutie? I think we should pick a QB if that is what Buddy thinks at this point, I really think we need to develop player more than draft one high though. Again, I think Vick had some questions and uncertainty when the Eagles signed him, something about sitting in a jail cell for 2 years doesn't scream "Franchise QB". Not sure I'd consider Favre at 39 years old a franchise QB, nor Flutie ever. Edited February 3, 2011 by Ghost of Rob Johnson

Not sure I'd consider Favre at 39 years old a franchise QB, nor Flutie ever. What's your point? There's no such thing as a franchise QB on draft day either. Everyone is a crap shoot. The premise was that it's not possible to find a QB in FA and several people have given examples of why that's not true.
bills_fan_in_raleigh Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I think we should pass on a developmental QB and only draft a QB in round 1 that can start right now. However I still feel it is more important for this team to address the trenches with this draft and mostly on the D side of the ball. We can draft a developmental QB in 3 - 6 rounds or wait till next year for a shot at Luck or any other franchise QB.
mattsox Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 .7 You could always sign FA def players, how often does anyone sign FA franchise QB in free agency? Didn't New Orleans? +1. It is hard to do so. But We Need a Drew Brees type of QB I believe here. Someone who has won, still young and can put a face on the franchise. It's exactly what the Bills need. Unfortunately it's a QB driven league and QB's like Brees will probably never hit the FA Market anymore...

So the out of touch boss is more than satisfied with the status quo. When accountability is not part of the organizational environment then it is not surprising that long-term floundering happens.

I definitely agree that it is a lot easier to sign a big-time LB in FA than a QB and anyone who says otherwise is just playing devil's advocate. I was with you until #3 when you try to minimize Luck's talents. He is/will be the highest touted QB prospect maybe ever. I'm not against drafting a QB though, as long as they believe he is THE MAN and not taking one for the sake of taking one, which I trust they won't do anyway. Bottom line, they won't be picking first in 2012, so they can't not take Gabbert or whoever, banking on taking Luck next year.

A couple of things -- To your #7 They also said they were going to build through the draft , i don't think you will see any big money free agents come into Buffalo !! DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS !! look at the 2 teams in there this year & see where there D is ranked . Plus how many games WOULD WE HAVE WON THIS YEAR IF WE HAD A MORE STOUT D ?? Think about it !! Last but not least franchise QB -- can you say J.P. Losman ????
