I was thrilled to hear that Jerry Gray got hired by UT this week. He is a great guy and I really felt he did a good job with our defense when he was here. I'm not sure why we let him walk. Of course, there are a lot of guys I feel we should have kept on our staff over the years: Polian, etc...

We let him walk because he had the stink of a failed head coach on him. That's why we all ran Perry Fewell out of town. That's how we roll. It's all or nothing.

Gray survived one houseclearing in Buffalo - Mularkey kept him; Gregg hired him. I do miss Fewell, but nobody's been interested in Gray as a coordinator since we ditched him. He's a college DBs coach now, not even a coordinator!

Actually, Gray is the assistant head coach as well at Texas.

That's a title we give out easily, haha. The last DB coach (Duane Akina) had it as well, even though he only coached DBs.

With all that experience coaching DB's you would think he would have fit in great with the Jets...a roster full of DB's!

Pat Williams, Sam Adams, Troy Vincent, Lawyer Milloy, Nate Clements, Aaron Schobel, Takeo Spikes, London Fletcher, Antoine Winfield... I hope he did a good job with that defense. I think a high school coach could have been the defensive coordinator and done a good job.

Congrats to Jerry Gray for his Texas job. I'm thrilled he's not the Bills DC. As a defensive coordinator in the NFL he wasn't very good, as evidenced by the fact that the Bills were his one, and only, DC gig in the NFL. And, let's face it, Gregg Williams was the defacto DC of the Bills all three of his HC years here. The players plus GW were the reason the Bills ended up #2 on D in 2003. Gray went along for the ride. I'll never forget the beating the Steelers 2nd stringers put on Jerry Gray's defense in the season finale of the 2004 season when the Bills could have made the playoffs with a win.

Dick LeBeau thanks you for the compliment.

When Perry Fewell did not get the HC position with the Bills he left the organization. It is standard practice that a new HC hires his own staff. PF was then hired by the Giants as a DC. I don't know what you are referring to when you state that he was run out of town?

If the fans aren't to blame, Promo will manufacture a reason why they were to blame. The Bills fans ran Perry Fewell out! They ran Bobby April out! It was April Fewell's day and the joke was on Bills fans for running them out!

The fans don't hire and fire coaches directly but you can't deny the prevailing opinions on boards like these. Fans make swift and absolute judgments on players and coaches, usually based on the most superficial of reasons. The greater majority here wanted nothing to do wiith Perry Fewell because he coached under Dick Jauron. No other reason was needed or considered

Non insane organizations don't make decisions based on what the fans want or think. In this situation regarding PF most posters were positive about Fewell, observing that the team was energized and played better under him. I'm not sure how you came to the opposite view?

You are joking right? Do I have to dig up every "I-want-everyone-and-everything-associated-with-Dick-Jauron-gone-from-this-team" thread??

The general commentary on PF's performance after taking over for Jauron was favorable. Your stating that he was run out of town by the fans is a product of your imagination. Could you dig up some harsh comments about him? Sure you can. If you want to go in the opposite direction you can also dig up comments supporting the opposite view. Again, your comments about the fans running him out of town is silly.

Obviously we have differing recollections. Maybe others can chime in? My memory was folks being generally against Fewell as a HC. Opinions on his job as interim HC ran from "Nice but I still want Cowher" to "Who cares? clean house!" Very few people wanted the Bills to keep Fewell on. I think my link shows that.

Whether the balance of commentary was for or against PF to be hired as a HC is not the issue. As your above quote states you made the assertion that he was driven out of the organization by the fanbase or unmerciful idiot bloggers. That is a whacky theory.

When PF was not selected on a permanent basis as the HC he searched for other opportunities. He simply left for another DC position with the Giants. Fewell is well aware how the NFL system works. When a new HC is hired the standard routine is for the new HC to assemble his own staff.

The consensus was that PF did a good job as an interim HC. The team seemed to be energized and the fanbase appreciated his more expressive personality than the stoic persona of Jauron on the sidelines. I agree with you that the overwhelming majority of people wanted to see a completely different coaching staff. But that was not the focus of your original post.
