Dr. Fong Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Check their egos? Who's in charge? The statement from Gailey should be, if hired, Wannstedt is the new DC and anyone not on board is fired! Exactly. I never thought I'd be happy to have Dave Wannstedt around, but I think he'd be a great asset to the team and really hope he comes on board.
NoSaint Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I'd like to agree with your assessment of what his coming to Buffalo first means, but alas I do not. In my view, coming to Buffalo first drives up Wanny's price tag for San Diego. I do agree with many that if he stays in Buffalo, it will be as AHC. It would be a weak move if they are tight to come to town, and create drama on his friends coaching staff to pad his paycheck somewhere else.
Coach Klein Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 If we hire Wannstedt, I vow to grow the most glorious (and by glorious I mean I'll be 22 next season so it won't be very good) mustache of all time throughout next season.
mousetrap08 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 (edited) just got posted on pro football talk that san diego is set to hire greg manusky dc. Edited January 14, 2011 by shadowcat10
The Senator Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 We need Wannstedt for one reason and one reason only - the power of the mustache. There hasn't been a decent stash on this staff since Chucky Lester got sent packing. Magnum Freakin Wannstedt P.I. And Curtis Modkins doesn't count. He should drop his lip in a bowl of milk and have a cat lick that poor excuse for a mustache off of his face. Modkins Get it right, man...it's ' Wannstache ' ... " Dave Wannstedt, best known as a former head coach of the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as the owner of the NFL's seventh greatest mustache ever, is in high demand for a number of coaching positions... Why is everyone jonesing for the Wannstache? Let's take a look back at his NFL body of work. In his four years as defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, Wannstedt's defenses went from 20th to 10th to 17th to 1st in the league in yards allowed. Maybe his name isn't the first you think of when those Super Bowl-winning Cowboys teams are mentioned, but Wannstedt does have a ring. When he got to Miami, the defense became as formidable as his mouth brow. In all five of his years as head coach, his defense was ranked in the top ten in the league in yardage allowed, even in 2004, where he opened the season 1-8 and lost his job. " (Link - Dave Wannstedt has suddenly become a hot coaching commodity) Let's get that Soup Strainer signed and on the sidelines this season! GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!!!
eggsinatruck Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 If we hire Wannstedt, I vow to grow the most glorious (and by glorious I mean I'll be 22 next season so it won't be very good) mustache of all time throughout next season. Mustache growth has less to do with age and more to do with testosterone or a lack thereof...

808 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 just wonder what the D will look like ifhe is hired. he is a 43 guy. better for kelsay ****ty for merriman
Doc Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I don't think anyone on the defensive staff has his unit performing well. The issue is the eternal question: is it the players, or is it the coaches? If we were loaded with what everyone in the league recognized as top-tier talent and were underperforming, you're absolutely right no one would bat an eye. But we're not. Giving his chosen hand-picked coaching staff only one year to implement a new system with questionable talent would be seen as: 1) bad judgment on Chan's part in choosing the wrong staff 2) disloyalty/blame shifting to his staff No one of quality wants to put his reputation and career into a situation like that. So yeah, the coaching community would be batting their eyes. Which is why Chan won't do it. I also doubt he'd do it. But most outsiders would trade Wannstedt and whoever he brings in (or retains) for the Bills' defensive coaches.
Mr_Blizzard Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Seriously, it would be sweet if DW joined the Bills coaching staff. The guy brings a lot of credibility. I remember his strategy on causing turnovers so the defensive players could "scoop and score". (Just like the cowboys did to the Bills in Supe XXVII )
JoeF Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Greg Manusky appears in line for the SD D Coordinators role.... Manusky
bowery4 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 This is to say the least an encouraging developement.
Munch Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 just got posted on pro football talk that san diego is set to hire greg manusky dc. Linky http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/01/13/report-chargers-set-to-name-greg-manusky-defensive-coordinator/ Sweet. Hopefully Wanny comes to Buffalo
NoSaint Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 just wonder what the D will look like ifhe is hired. he is a 43 guy. better for kelsay ****ty for merriman If he were ILB coach, it would imply 3-4.... Also almost every team runs a little of each unless you have specialized personnel like undersized cover 2 players. Last, I'd assume Edwards would still be in charge of his defense with DW acting as a peer and consultant, not as Edwards boss. Attending meetings for gameplanning that would normally be only HC, OC, and DC for gameplanning as an additional role. Perhaps input on personnel beyond LBs.
sllib olaffub Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Word on ProFootballTalk is that the Chargers are signing Manusky as Defensive Coordinator. That is a big, big plus for us, here. Wannstdedt was also linked to that job, perhaps the only one with as much of a connection as this Gailey staff. So, with that out, and with us probably set to offer him Assist. Head Coach, Defensive consultant type position - we could stand to really have a nice core of coaches in place. Man, if we landed him... it would leave Nix the job to just stock us up with players - and, according to Merriman's interview, it sounded like Nix was planning on adding some real quality competition this offseason. So, things could be looking up. I'm all for a hybrid defense. We have guys that can play in a 3-4, albeit we need more help there, but I think our 4-3 look could be really lethal if we add a D-lineman like Bowers or Dareus or Fairley. Imagine a 4 man front of Fairley, Troupe, Williams, and Carrington. Yeah. Or, Bowers, Troupe, Williams, Carrington. And, behind them, Moats, Poz, Merriman? That would be tough to run against, and could be hard on the QB in passing downs. How would Fairley line up in a 3-4? Would it be Fairley, Williams, Carrington? It would be Bowers, Williams, Carrington if we drafted him, but that seems so out-of-position for Bowers, the 3-4, that I doubt we'd draft him. Rather, Dareus, Williams, Carrington. That's nice. Behind which we'd have Moats/Kelsay, Batten, Poz, and Merriman? Could be pretty good, I guess. The 4-3 looks better to me, though.
Special_K Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I can't decide if I'm happy that we're talking about adding the first legit DC to our team since Dick LeBeau was here wet nursing Jerry Gray (ultimate fail letting him leave to keep Gray) or if I'm beyond distraught that I'm even entertaining the idea of being excited about the Wannstache.
silvermike Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 How would Fairley line up in a 3-4? Would it be Fairley, Williams, Carrington? Behind which we'd have Moats/Kelsay, Batten, Poz, and Merriman? Could be pretty good, I guess. The 4-3 looks better to me, though. I'm never sure, but I think our best front there would be Williams-Troup-Fairley. It'd be an aggressive front, with neither end really playing 5 technique and instead shooting gaps. You'd need an LB on the strong side willing to close off a rushing lane - probably a job for Kelsay. Probably a job for someone better than Kelsay. Merriman could blitz. That'd be an excellent four man rush, though you'd really need Poz to show some ability to cover tight ends.

So yeah, the coaching community would be batting their eyes. Which is why Chan won't do it. Your point is valid, but I haven't seen any evidence yet that this regime (especially Nix) acts out of concern for what people around the league think. If I'm Gailey, I see in Wannstedt a guy I know and believe in, who's available and willing to consider Buffalo, and my one best chance to attract a "big fish" to make the team demonstrably better before my tenure as a HC in the NFL comes to an end. I do what I have to do, jettison who I have to jettison, to get this guy. Assistants get sold out all the time, every season, all over the league. Gailey has said that everyone, including coaches, is evaluated constantly. If he moves on Wannstedt, he's simply acting consistent with his words.
Pilsner Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Wanny has one hellz of a cookie duster stache. It would be awesome if he came on board. Wasn't he the DC for Dallas during their SB runs?
