Then, in his post season press conference, he mentions how he needs to improve his pass blocking. Is it possible that spiller would be the number one if he could pass block? Is he unwilling or unable to pick it up? No, but we do have an early leader for dumbest thread of 2011. As many have already pointed out - it's totally standard for rookie RB's to struggle with blitz pickup. Worse for Spiller that he missed time in camp. He'll be fine next year. Mango Posted January 14, 2011 Share Posted January 14, 2011 i agree on giving him more time. i am still holding out hope for the kid. i think he still may pan out. do i think he can be a feature, every carry back? my take so far is no, i dont even see glimpses of that. do i think he can be a force in the league at a very real level? absolutely. the only comments on this thread(atleast from me) are on his ability to pass block, which as of right now he is currently poor. But the kid does not look he can block much of anyone yet. Educate me, kind TSWers: What kind of offense does Clemson run? If a guy is used to a fairly simple playbook, having to decode 1) the play 2) what his blocking responsibilities may be to the point where it's instantaneous physical reaction, I can see that taking a while. Nominally Bills RB coach is also OC - we all know Gailey does the game plan, but does the OC have additional responsibilities that give him less time to devote to position coaching? I hope the Bills will look at that and do whatever it takes to help Spiller get up to speed, even if it's hire an assistant to tutor/drill him. I have the personal hunch that Spiller, and influence on Spiller's development, is one reason Lynch got shot out of town. It's 100% personal hunch though. spartacus Posted January 15, 2011 Share Posted January 15, 2011 Jim Kelly proved flat out that one can be dumb as a stump about real life and one can still be a great football player. The conventional wisdom tends to be wrong about many things but one thing it seems to pretty right about is that you need to see how a player performs over 3 seasons before you declare that player a bust based on one year of disappointing performance (or two years in Moulds case) or declare a player a football god based on a year's success. It also seems pretty lame to draw conclusions based on what an announcer says a player told them. I do not think that Spiller will ever make us forget about how Thurman used to do blitz pickup but even dumb players improve over an off-season (and or coaches learn how to compensate for any lack of skills at this use in the game. what's with the Kelly hate? calling a player "dumb as a stump"who called his own plays and helped design the no-huddle is just a little, shall I say, DUMB maybe you should take your own advice and not listen to moronic posters commenting on Kelly's intelligence- because I'm sure you have no first hand data to back it up Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
