bananathumb Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 He is a huge question mark. Tonight will help answer the question, but not fully. QBs are just too difficult to project coming of of college. I think it will go right down to the day of the draft. He will likely go anywhere from 1 to 5, so we are right in the middle of Cam Newton talk. Caroline might grab him or he might be ours if we want him. It is also a huge game for Fairly; the other two big boys on D - Bowers and Dareus - did not look like top 3 picks in their bowl games, so Fairly needs to show he's a sure thing. Otherwise, we might as well take a shot at Cam ... if he's there.
section122 Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I don't think anyone should be making their entire opinion on this one game. 6 weeks after the season with all that time to prepare for the defense. He is a special talent and its not the hard to youtube highlights of all of the games this season to have an informed opinion whichever side of the fence you fall on. Me I would take either dareus fairley or him... so far until I look deeper into other top prospects seasons
BuffaloBaumer Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I really don't think Carolina is going to pick a QB now that Luck is not coming out. It is well known that Carolina's GM really likes Claussen and only someone like Luck would have probably made them pick QB again. I have not seen Newton play but I will be the first one to admit that if he has a great game and the Bills pick him, it would be pretty exciting. Having said that, I would be VERY happy with Fairley but I really don't think he will be there at 3.
purple haze Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 (edited) Show me you can win a big game, come from behind, throw accurately, evade a strong rush, He's already done all of this. See the Alabama game? Edited January 10, 2011 by purple haze
TH3 Posted January 10, 2011 Author Posted January 10, 2011 I also hate to say this, all he comparisons seem to be to VY (who by the way is something like 27-17 as a starter in the NFL - and if he wasn't a head case would be a considered a great player - his problems are not because he is a bad QB or is a combo runner/passer - but because he is immature). If CN was white...he would be the next Elway. I hope we draft him.
Bangarang Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Wasn't it Akeem Alajuwon (sp?) He was actually pretty good too. Akeem Olajuwon and yes.

This one game is more than enough to determine if he's the best QB in the NFL next year. Heck, I'll have the answer before the 1st quarter is over.
Mango Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 To be honest I think he's closer to John Elway but much faster and with the moves of a RB. wait that makes no sense. the rules on here are that you can only compare him to other black people. thats why he is vince young, david garrard, jamarcus russel, and warren moon all rolled into one. i was actually thinking the same thing about elway. the only thing cam newton has in common with those other black qbs is that he is black
Buffalo Barbarian Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Has good talent but is more runner than passer, so I'll pass.

starrymessenger Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Win a big game? At Alabama this year? SEC Championship game? Those are pretty big games. Come from behind? Auburn has come from behind in 8 games to win but the biggest was likely the Alabama game after being down 24-7 to win it 28-27. He is a once in a generation athlete who set an NCAA record for passing effeciency who is 6-6 250 and run a legit 4.4 40. Passing on him for anyone else will be the equivalent to teams passing on Michael Jordan for Clyde Drexler and Sam Bowie. He instantly gives this team a chance to win every game, he has no character issues and is a born leader. His pro day, combine and BCS performance tonight will likely push him to the no. 1 pick with Luck being out. You prolly don't believe that but it's true. With a strong showing tonight, a great combine and good interviews I definitely do believe it. If all that happens I expect him to go # 1 overall.
Mr. WEO Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I'm with you...but I am also smelling Vince Young, etc. I don't want "charisma" that is actually "immaturity". I don't want "vocal leader" that is actually "whines/blames others when things don't go his way". I don't want "can throw a ball 60 yards on his knees" that is actually "can't even read man or zone, never mind coverages, therefore can't even complete 10 yard passes in real game". I don't want "running threat" that is actually "undisciplined, play-book averse fool that will run for 120 yards a game...and throw for 30, and then do shoe commericals". (Especially in Gailey's quick read/throw offense) I am looking forward to tonight, honestly. But, I want to see some adversity for Newton, and, I want to see him make some NFL-level throws and perhaps even read some defenses. He's a big risk to take and he scares the crap out of me. What's with you guys? Newton has led his team to 4 come from behind wins this year--including down 24 against Alabama in maybe the greatest college game of the year. Pay attention.
BravinSeattle Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Has good talent but is more runner than passer, so I'll pass. So you're saying you've only watched a couple of games and haven't looked at his stats? Gotcha.
DrDawkinstein Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 So you're saying you've only watched a couple of games and haven't looked at his stats? Gotcha. no kidding. the kid threw for 335 yards, 4TDs and 0INTs in the SEC Champ... but he cant pass and runs too much.
jangalang Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 It is also a huge game for Fairly; the other two big boys on D - Bowers and Dareus - did not look like top 3 picks in their bowl games, so Fairly needs to show he's a sure thing. Otherwise, we might as well take a shot at Cam ... if he's there. Being healthy for the first time all year, Dareus had 3 tackles, 2 TFLs, 1 sack, and 3 qb hurries, all while being double-teamed. Michigan St. had -48 yards rushing, and he played a big role in that. He looked like a top 3 pick. When it comes to Newton, if you want to see how good he is, notice how many of his completions are to wide open receivers. His coach (Malzahn) deserves a lot of the credit Newton is getting in terms of his ability as a passer.
aristocrat Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 this team needs to stop the run. if we can address this with a big def tackle in free agency i wouldnt mind a shot at newton. if chan thinks he can coach newton then i am all for it but this kid better start from day 1.

He actually doesn't need to start day 1. You can sit him for a year to learn and build up the offensive line.
Dr. Fong Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 If one thing should be evident from this weekend's playoff games it's that a franchise QB is NOT the key piece to the puzzle. You need to become bullies on both sides of the ball and THEN you go take care of your skill positions. Watching the games this weekend one thing that stood out to me is how anemic the Bills look when compared to linemen and LBs on these playoff teams. Draft the line early and often and upgrade the heck out of the strength and conditioning program because what the Bills are doing in that regard simply is not working.
FightClub Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 Show me you can win a big game, come from behind, throw accurately, evade a strong rush, make a good martini, have dogs and small children like you, look good in a bikini..... Alright - I already think CN would make our team better in alot of ways - one thing I think he would bring is a sense of youthful excitement and charisma - because - our Bills are one damn boring team. Let's face it - Fitz has a great beard and everything - but he definately has "old dude" written all over him. Do people remember Leonard Smith running out of the tunnel to "Leonards Lair" - man we could use a dose of that The Bills could use something that points our team to a new direction - attract actual good free agents... Look forward to seeing tonites game - I think CN ends up in the top 5 in the draft. How I long for the days when I could call a 27 year old guy an "old dude".
The Senator Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I think that, after tonight, you guys are going to want Darron Thomas much more than Cam Newton. JMO. GO DUCKS!!!! Quack Out Loud!!!!!
