I love our draft position (though I hate how we got there). Everyone knows Luck is gone at #1, thus leaving us with a choice of Newton, Mallett or even the possibility of acquiring VY in a trade. IF we decide to go with a QB, I hope that we choose someone mobile and big enough, like Roethlisberger, to break tackles in the pocket. It's no mystery that our o-line is in the bottom half of the league in terms of talent. I would submit that the Steelers o-line was as well this past season, especially after losing their starting tackles. However, Ben's size and ability to break tackles buys a lot of time in the pocket and allows a young, yet improving receiving corps time to get open.

Therefore, if we DO go QB at 3 or acquire a vet, I hope that it is someone with this kind of size and athletic ability to make our o-line look better. In other words, if we go QB, I hope it is Cam Newton.

If a team chooses to depend on their QBs fleet feet to avoid rush issues there are several things they will also need to do:

1. Make sure they have a good back-up QB who is capable of playing the Frank Reich role of being a credible starter for at least 3 games as a strategy which relies on your QB to be more than a change of pace running threat is likely to see this QB go down for significant periods of time.

2. Do not forget that the weak OL in protecting the passer is likely a weak OL in opening the holes for the running game and simply getting a tough QB will help but does not get rid of the need to upgrade the OL but now you have used your first rounder on a QB so you are using later picks to upgrade your OL.

3. You may well have to use later picks to upgrade your OL because you have primary needs to upgrade at LB and on DL. If you spend the #3 on your QB and your second on the needed upgrade at OL for your running game then you now relegate the needed upgrade at 2 D positions to later picks.

Is hard to see how your strategy produces a winner.

There is something to be said for the saying "you can't coach size". Fitz, as a relatively short QB, will suffer more batted passes whenever the OL is heavily pressured.

That said, you can't coach brains and heart very well either. Smaller QB such as Warner and Brees buy time by being "elusive".

I wish Cam Newton had a longer track record. When you come down to it, he's really only played 2 seasons in a top college program (freshman at FL and this year at Auburn).

In another thread, I thought it was a really good point "stop drafting players who don't have 4 years of college experience".
