DC Tom Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Anyone else goign to be watching tonight? I'll have the projector fired up for this one Thanks for reminding me; I'd have completely forgot. It'll be a pleasant break from Torchwood reruns.
Mark Vader Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 I am definitely watching. They had a panel for this show at WonderCon, and it looks very good. I like the concept of starting the show after the aliens have already attacked the planet and essentially have won. Now it's all about the remaining survivors doing what they can to save humanity. Also the alien machines look great, kind of remind me of the Invid from Robotech. One other thing, as far as all the hate you guys were giving "V", let me just say that I watched that show all the way through, and while the first season was just ok, the second season was awesome. The stories got better, the characters were getting more rounded, and direction of the show kept you guessing. Not to mention that they had come up with a good twist as a set up for a third season. Unfortunately ABC decided to pull the plug on the show. Bad ratings will do that. It's unfortunate that people did not continue to tune in, because they had something good going. Sometimes a show needs a chance to grow to become very good. Not every show can be an instant hit like "Lost" & "24".
/dev/null Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 It offends modern sensibilities to think aliens would travel light years and overlook bacterial infections. Mars isn't light years away

I really hope it's good, man...I know we've both mentioned our displeasure with the 'V' remake...and The Event was a huge turd...I really hope Spielberg's influence makes this worthy of watching future episodes. And that's saying a LOT, cause I typically geek out to alien stuff as much or more than anyone. I'm ready for a fresh start, so looking forward to tonight. Not sure if Noah Wylie is a capable lead, but we'll see!

/dev/null Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 What if light takes a wrong turn at Albuquerque? Then you need to get the Illudium Q36 Explosive Space Modulator
Doc Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 "What? She turned the sky red? I sat through twelve episodes of boring-ass story and Morena Baccarin with an ugly-ass haircut for this monkey-ass bull **** ending?" Just curious...was that your reaction to the season "finale", too? It's like the producers said "Hey, that's a great idea...let's build suspense by introducing absolutely no meaningful storyline or dramatic tension, then viewers will keep coming back just to see if anything's ever going to happen! It worked for Lost, didn't it?" How V got picked up for another season absolutely confounds me. I'm half-hoping it turns out that the aliens in "Falling Skies" are coming to Earth with the simple mission of hunting down and killing everyone involved with the production of "V" (except for Baccarin's hair stylist, who should be hunted down and tortured for a very, very long time - perhaps by watching "V" reruns). I'll tell you how: Morena Baccarin (even with the ugly-ass haircut), ELizabeth Mitchell, and Laura Vandervoort. But a 3rd season is looking like a longshot unless the storyline improves. LMAO....how much more you got in there? What about Cloverfield? Exorcise those demons, dude!!! Actually, I tell you what, War of the Worlds was one of the top ten most intense experiences I've ever had in my home theater. The sound effects in that film scared the BEJEEEEEEZURS outta me. I know a lot of people didn't care for it, but I geeked out to it big time...same with Cloverfield. If you have the chance to watch either of those in a home theater with a big, bad subwoofer and a projector, it's tough to beat. Grab a beer, kick off your shoes, and crank up the volume....good times! Tom mentioned District 9 earlier in the thread...that film is easily one of my favorites of all time. I'm really looking forward to seeing it for the third time in the near future. I heard there was talk about making a sequel to it, so if they do then I hope Peter Jackson is on board....if not, it may be crap. I loved the WotW remake. That they were grinding-up humans and using them as fertilizer was eerie. It offends modern sensibilities to think aliens would travel light years and overlook bacterial infections. Wells was a visionary. In the 2005 movie, Speilberg needed to change the ending. Maybe a weak spot in the mothership? Cloverfield was great as was District 9. Wells was a visionary, but he couldn't envision antibiotics. Then again, who knows if bacteria would harm aliens +/- whether they have antibiotics to fight them?
ajzepp Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 I loved the WotW remake. That they were grinding-up humans and using them as fertilizer was eerie. I was surprised that more people didn't like it...glad to know there are a few of us out there who were affected by it though...I thought it was really well done
Doc Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I was surprised that more people didn't like it...glad to know there are a few of us out there who were affected by it though...I thought it was really well done Cruise didn't add much, the older son finding his way safely to his mom was hokey, the basement scene was too long, and I still don't like the ending, but otherwise it was a well done movie.

Well, Falling Skies was good enough that I will keep watching. I won't talk about it too much in case you guys haven't watched it yet, but I'd give it about a B in terms of an overall grade. I don't know about you guys, but I've had an asssful of Hyundai and strawberry pop tart commercials
Mark Vader Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Then you need to get the Illudium Q36 Explosive Space Modulator Sending ultimatum: Surrender, or be blown into 17,670,002 micro-cells.
Peace Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Wells was a visionary, but he couldn't envision antibiotics. Then again, who knows if bacteria would harm aliens +/- whether they have antibiotics to fight them? I made my comment 7 months ago but I was complimenting Wells and criticizing Spielberg for not changing the ending to something more plausible. Doesn't matter: movie stunk.
HopsGuy Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I read through this thread and strangely enough I had this same conversation earlier today with a friend who asked if he should watch his DVR'd "Falling Skies". I watched the first hour and will get around to the rest later. My first impression is that it's like "The Walking Dead" rather than "V" because we're presented with people whose world has changed totally and something is after them and if they catch you, they make you one of them (or at least a mindless slave). I really liked "V" probably because of what Doc mentioned (especially Laura Vandervoot, wow!). The enemy side at least had some texture/personality and who doesn't love an evil villain? I'll probably keep watching because I need something to fill in the blanks now that "Game of Thrones" and (yes) "The Killing" are off for 9 months. Heck, I owe this show a few more viewings just for the line that Noah had comparing the evil aliens to the NY Yankees.
John from Riverside Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 I just dont look at film the same as I did 2 years ago anymore.....probably because I am not too close to the business. My daughter knows some of the cast so we were definately watching.....I have my own opinions on the show but will keep them to myself in case someone hasn't seen it yet.

A lot of action to get things started, which was nice. But the dialogue, plot line and acting are underwhelming.....so far.

But the dialogue, plot line and acting are underwhelming.....so far. That's pretty consistent with most of the criticisms I've read so far...that it's less character driven and more reliant on special effects and CGI. I'm not eagerly awaiting next week's episode like I was after the premier of The Walking Dead, but I'm gonna keep watching for sure.
outsidethebox Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 I liked it. It was a lot better than V in my opinion. Will be watching the second episode. This show has a lot of potential. To bad it will be on at 10:00. I don't have a DVR. So it is kind of late when you have to get up at 3:45AM.

Yeah, but it's not uncommon for new series to have flat characters and stilted dialog. A good series will grow into it by the second season (witness NCIS: LA - not a great show, but the second season was by far better than the first, just for that reason.) Falling Skies has potential to do that; they pretty cleanly introduced the characters, the relationships between them, and the general setting and plot in one 2-hour episode, without being completely pandering or a total snooze-fest. That's about as much as you can ask for a series premire. I liked it. It was a lot better than V in my opinion. Will be watching the second episode. This show has a lot of potential. To bad it will be on at 10:00. I don't have a DVR. So it is kind of late when you have to get up at 3:45AM. Or early, depending on your point of view.
