bkc Posted December 30, 2010 Author Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) Can all you Buddy Nix apologists explain the Chris Kelsay re-signing? 4 years and $24 million? I accept the excuses for the poor 2010 draft class production and the lack of big-name 2010 free agents, but the Kelsay contract is !@#$ing inexcusable. It reeks of the same foul stench that permeated Marv Levy's GM tenure. in the Nfl all that matters is guarenteed money. Kelsey does not have much so the contract is really pay as you GO . They can cut him at any point point and lose nothing. THIS IS NOT AN OLIVER PEREZ CONTRACT. Edited December 30, 2010 by bkc
RuntheDamnBall Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 How about any one of these 5? Anthony Davis Mike Iupati Jermaine Gresham Bryan Bulaga Dez Bryant Any one of these would have been a better pick. I'll certainly crawfish if Spiller turns out to be good. But so far, as the #9 pick in the draft, he's not. You're not allowed to draft RTs, interior linemen or TEs in the top ten! NOOOOOOO.
John from Riverside Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 How about any one of these 5? Anthony Davis Mike Iupati Jermaine Gresham Bryan Bulaga Dez Bryant Any one of these would have been a better pick. I'll certainly crawfish if Spiller turns out to be good. But so far, as the #9 pick in the draft, he's not. - Wasnt Davis considered lazy? - I thought Lupati was a very good player....but we JUST got done drafting Wood and Levitre - Bulaga got benched this year and is playing more by default? - I also thought Dez Bryant was a good player.....but lets be honest. Does Stevie Johnston get his shot if we draft ANOTHER wideout high like we did Hardy? If we drafted Dez something tells me Stevie is still catching splinters. or - Chan had already talked about his need for a "scat back", and there is no denying Spillers speed, college production (and consistancy), and potential. We needed both a runner AND a reciever and Spiller had shown he could do both. We didnt know what was going to happen with Lynch......Jackson was making some comments in the media at the time (I think)......so there was plenty of reason for this pick. And no...CJ does NOT need to have 2K yards next season in order to be the justified pick. He needs to greatly improve in running, receiving, and pass protection.....which I fully expect him to. Keep in mind......with CJ you also have a kid with not only loads of talent but a great attitude....he is not a primadonna malcontent. Charactor of a player goes a long way when you have unrealized potential in my opinion.
reddogblitz Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 You're not allowed to draft RTs, interior linemen or TEs in the top ten! NOOOOOOO. I know you are being sarcastic, but Seattle drafted Okung at number 4. Hasn't really worked out so good yet as he's been hurt a lot this year.
Ball'n Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Again, they may have fielded offers and had discussions leading up to draft day. You should have a pretty good idea of who is looking for what, and what they are willing to deal by then. Particularly with the 1st round pick. On draft day, I'd still prefer they take time and just pretend they are looking at all the options, even if they aren't. I agree, but I think he is referring to how Nix stated that he does not like to move around during a draft and how it is rare for him to do so. He said this before the draft, to the media.

I know Buddy said that he doesn't understand all the moving around on draft day, however when he was with the Chargers they pulled off one of the biggest draft day deals in recent memory. Remember he did say he was trying to move back into round one durning last draft. We never found out for which player. He will move but if he wants a player ,or gets a good deal to move back, but he will not do the Pats thing when he moves all around the board .

Can only surmise that Kelsay, although weak on the field, is strong in the force. "There are no droids..., you will sign me to a long-term deal, I am an impact player on this team..."
Malazan Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) I just dont understand people sometimes....THIS TEAM WAS IN SHAMBLES....they did NOT expect to win this year. They will get more defensive reinforcements when they draft Bowers...... I don't know how this eludes so many people on this board. They knew exactly what so many were proclaiming prior to the season that the Bills were going to be bad. So why make poor decisions trying to 'win' this year (and ruining their draft position!). This board is more inconsistent than Trent Edwards at QB. Yes I am a Nix apologist, but I too was baffled by that deal. Can only surmise that Kelsay, although weak on the field, is strong in the force. "There are no droids..., you will sign me to a long-term deal, I am an impact player on this team..." Low guaranteed money, and backloaded on salary. They can cut him in a couple years if he doesn't perform. After getting over the sticker shock, take a look at the deal again. He ended up basically getting less than 500k a year increase and put a lot of 'power' in the Bills hands on whether he gets that money. Edited December 30, 2010 by jeremy2020
Sisyphean Bills Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Low guaranteed money, and backloaded on salary. They can cut him in a couple years if he doesn't perform. After getting over the sticker shock, take a look at the deal again. He ended up basically getting less than 500k a year increase and put a lot of 'power' in the Bills hands on whether he gets that money. This logic never gets old. If they didn't re-sign him in September, they'd still be able to offer him a deal next week and based on his performance over the entire season. Furthermore, if the highlight of the deal is that he can still get cut, they could just let him hit free agency, test the market, and wave good-bye instead of giving him a nice bonus and firing him. Finally, any deal to make him the highest average paid OLB in the NFL at his age sets a precedent for all of the team's contract negotiations going forward. They paid Kelsay and now fans are wondering why Donte Whitner is upset they're not offering him a generous raise? Really?
Kevin Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 You all can say what you want about the Bills, but they are moving in the RIGHT direction. They unloaded the inconsistent, overly cautious Edwards, the malcontent Marshawn, and it seems like they are trying NOT to overpay Whitner. They drafted a good future running back to compliment Fred Jackson, a wide receiver that has promise (but unfortunately was injured), a good defensive tackle, and end, and pass rushing linebacker to replace Maybin. The crop of undrafted free agents has done great! As far as Modrak goes, what if he isn't the big shot caller on draft day that everyone makes him out to be? If I remember correctly Modrak didn't want Maybin, but Juaron needed a "miracle" pick and overrode him. Maybe I am wrong, but it seems like all Modrak does is suggest who to pick, and the final approval went with Juaron. That to me would explain all of the defensive backs drafted during the Juaron years. There is no question that this franchise has suffered deeply without a true GM, sorry, but this includes Marv. We finally have a true GM, the best GM since Polian. The Bills may finish 4-12, but it was arguably the most exciting gut wrenching 4-12 I have ever seen. Here is to a better Bills franchise, no lock out in 2011, a rookie salary cap, and no more Toronto series! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!! I love you guys.
Thoner7 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Why does it seem like so many accept the excuse of "thats who they had rated as BPA so thats who they took/They liked him and they took him I have no problem with that" This is routinely throw out there as a reason for our terrible picks to be ok. essentailly what you are saying is "our scouts are completely incompetant yet I dont care as long as they get the guy they like best" My biggest beef with our scouts in drafting Spiller/Maybin/McKelvin is the fact that they had those players rated as BPA! When they were clearly not - as proven by their production on the field. We did find out - it was Demaryius Thomas, the WR selected by Denver. When did we learn that? And then why were all the anouncements of us trying to trade up made after he was selected? And to go with my above post - just F'ing great. Buddy tris to trade up for a WR that isnt the clear cut best WR out there in Dez Bryant :wallbash:

I feel that I was not clear in in my previous post that a NFL player will run over their mother or anyone else in a semi truck for guaranteed money. The reason for the 'inflated' numbers in kelsay's contract is because much of it is not guaranteed. If you look at the contract, he got a raise from his previous contract of less than 500k a year. Now, I am not familiar with this part and hoepfully someone can fill in here. If he's eligible for the veteran minimum raise, is that not 10%? That would be $370,000 a year. So the Bills gave about $130,000 a year above what they were mandated to give in regards to a new contract. Again, I may be wrong on him being eligible for a mandatory 10% or what that percentage actually is and what the finer points of how that veteran clause applies. DreReed83 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) Who would I have taken? Dez Bryant and his 1069 all purpose yds and 8 TDs wouldve been nice. Or Jason Pierre Paul's 4.5 sacks and 2 FF would've helped out a bit. Maybe Brandon Graham's 3 sacks and 2 FF? Possibly. Earl Thomas and his 5 INT's and 1 FF would've been nice too. But NO. We had to take the wonderboy. Spiller. And NO. I'm not talking in hindsight. I wanted these guys ahead of Spiller from day one. Edited December 30, 2010 by DreReed83

Sisyphean Bills Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Guaranteed money is the end all / be all of contracts. I'm not quibbling with you about the structure of the contract. It's about the process and timing and rationale. What was the rush? Why sign the guy in September when it was blatantly obvious that he was struggling very badly, trying to be charitable here, to try to make an ill-conceived conversion to an OLB? Bluntly put, he has no functional role to this team if it pursues this transition to a 3-4 defense other than possibly as a mediocre 3rd down rush specialist. It's almost like a tacit confirmation -- and metaphorical kick in the crotch -- that the organization is actually seeking out and collecting these Aaron Maybin type pass rushers.

He wasn't the GM who made that trade, and I wouldn't call it one of the biggest anythings in recent memory. Manning didn't want to play in SD so they traded the player the Giants wanted (Manning) for their second option (Rivers) and picks. I wonder, how many conversations you've had with Nix over the years. You really seem to know exactly what he will/won't do.
reddogblitz Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 (edited) Earl Thomas and his 5 INT's and 1 FF would've been nice too. I live in Seattle and have seen this guy a lot. He's amazing. He's everywhere. He also scored a TD on a blocked punt recovery and run in. And he's doing all of this on a really bad defense. My wife gave me an Earl jersey for Christmas !! Dez Bryant would have been awesome too. And he's a better return man than Twinkle Toes Spiller. Put me down as thinking the Spiller pick was lame. Edited December 31, 2010 by reddogblitz
