Since I am OP I turn this in to this, my true frustration. I check out. I have everything in a bag, or just carrying a xyz - one item. They sometimes are looking right at you as you check out. Why must I stop just to let them look at my receipt when all they do is glance at it and mark it with a marker!?

 

There have been many times where I simply just hand my receipt and keep walking. What happens then? I clearly have a receipt. I bought everything with a credit card - so there is a record, as well.

 

What happens if I just ignore them?! If I just say "no?" "I'm in a hurry, sorry?" "Not today?"

 

 

At what point does it become neccessary for a merchanidiser to create a scene and to remain unseen?

 

The merchandiser does not make the scene. It's the the person who refuses to show the reciept that the merchandiser requires that is making the scene.

That is very interesting point. I work with a lot of...shady... people. They have told me many stories of boosting things and offered me many items. They never steal from Walmart. They chose your smaller stores, your minimall and stripmall locations. Your mom-and-pop stores, too. Simply because it is easier. Walmart deters theft because they are proactive at it but having a 60+ year old woman at the door cannot be that much of a factor.

 

Think about it...a teenager might be a little scared and give tell tale signs of shoplifting to the old woman as he walks out, but what is she going to do? They don't carry radios and it is the security detail in the door right at the exit/enterence that intervenes. It is - well, I do not really get why they do it?!

If you don't want to comply, just keep moving, don't be confrontational and just ignore them. Carry yourself in a confident and authoritative manner, again, WITHOUT BEING CONFRONTATION. There are times when I "regroup" after the sale before I leave the door and don't want to be hasseled with digging the paperwork out again... It is usually to put away my money. Maybe I am OCD? Nothing about being rebellious, just don't want to be hassled. Just keep quiet and keep on walking. If that is too hard, just "pick and roll." If they are stopping people, just wait till they ask somebody else and then leave around them. It really isn't about being rebellious with me more than its about the policy being a PINTA... Like I said, I usually "regroup" within the confines of the store than having to sort through your dough and other crap in an open area or my vehicle. If they come up to me while I packing my crap (sales receipt and money) away, I got no problem with a comply. I will use the confines of the store for what it is worth... It is just habit especially when you are in rough parts of town, I don't want to be disorganized and I want the ability to carry myself well. Asking to see my stuff is a PINTA. Just a personal safety habit... Unless they are a cop, I don't even acknowledge the request.

I wonder if any place has created a system yet where any purchased goods are immediately brought to the door either by an employee or some sort of machine. You can't claim your goods until you show your receipt. That would essentially end this issue. It's probably not practical from a money point of view and of course someone would complain about something, so obviously it will never happen.

Interesting you say that. Remember catalog stores like Brand Names and Montgomery Ward?

Service Merchandise also. I remember going there when I was young. All the product was kept in the back, only one demo item on a shelf. Write down the product number, go pay at the register, then go and wait at pickup for the item to come out. Eventually they went with the standard dept store model with everything out on the floor. Then they went out of business.
